They trust their readership to be savvy and intelligent enough to see right through such outrageous statements. If they had more directly challenged a man as thin-skinned as he is, he would have simply clamped shut the interview early and left them with nothing else.

Instead they used an attorney's trick: let them talk. Talk and talk and talk because you're going to learn far more from that than the person flapping their pie-hole ever intended. Given enough rope, ya' know–

The man is severely mentally ill or suffering from Dementia.

The republicans who were flattering him and enabling him the other day have betrayed America.

And if the reporters would simply ask the most elementary follow-up question, there would be no doubt that the skeptics are correct. But they just let him unspool, doubtless thinking, "Hoo boy, does he sound like an imbecile!" Ask him a goddam question! You're not on his payroll.

Trump engages repeatedly in the most transparent, shallow, childish strategies that he obviously believes will persuade others. No other president in your lifetime of either party has ever made any of these messianic, bombastic claims; and if any of them had ever suddenly woken up and made such claims, their cabinet would have certified them as disabled from office. And the weak, afraid, cowering, petty haters are so desperate to cleanse their lives of what they consider the pain, stain and odor of a black human presiding for 8 years that they will clutch any and all extreme aberrations. In any other time for any other person they would be joining each other to call this madness

When folks with progressing dementia can't remember details easily available to most people, they sometimes turn to braggadocio to bamboozle folks. The brag, backed up by insults and bullying, virtually assures that the Alzheimer's affected person will not be challenged. This is Trumpy's MO.

Sooner or later, a reporter is going to conjure the guts to challenge Trumpy. Unfortunately, that may be the last time that the reporter is allowed in the same room as Trumpy. But someone's going to have to take the fall.
