When Did It Become Cool To Be A Nazi?

I don't ever remember this level of hate being displayed in public ever. We have Nazis marching in our fucking streets! This is not normal!

You know what else is not normal? White supremacy. You know if I remember we fought wars to prevent fascism from coming on US soil. But it did and it's the shit show everyone predicted.

But here's the thing they're not telling you about who's really racist. Yeah we can make jokes about Uncle Tom being a racist, but you know who's even more racist? Tom's teenage son Timmy, who works at the local Dominoes Pizza, making $5 an hour. Secretly, while we're not looking, Timmy is the leader of a pro Nazi group on Steam and posts on the Daily Stormer, and follows Pro Trump hate groups on Twitter.

But none of this is funny. Hate isn't funny. Racism isn't funny. White supremacism and Nazism isn't funny. Death threats aren't funny. I really want to believe that this whole hate thing is a fad but I fear something much worse is coming.

People hate what they don't understand and thanks to the GOP's reckless anti education policies, something went very wrong in the last 4 years. That is something we need to work on fixing. Hate isn't funny, it has consequences.

Some people only feel good about the lives they live, if they can blame others for all their lost chances. They won't take responsibility for their actions of course, some woman, black or brown, Jewish or Muslim person did "this" to them.

None of us are guaranteed anything, but you won't get those young white guys to believe that.
To waste your days in hate to belong to something. If they weren't actually hurting someone, it's actually sad.

As far as I know, they have had groups since the 80s. Even before that, in the early 60s, the John Birch Society shared the same beliefs.

Trump has made it normal. I guess Obama being a black president was too much and Trump stepped into his 3rd and last come back. He failed at real estate. He played the most important executive in America on his tv show.

Now he assumes Reagan’s legacy. He will be the best Reagan ever, using white supremacy and at the same time denying it.

Hate from Nazis use to be funny in the 80s because it could not happen...see Blues Brothers.

We are now on edge because Trump has made them mainstream.

Even Holocaust survivors have said the rise of Trump reminds them of 1930s Germany. I don't think Trump is smart or mentally stable enough to ever reach the level of Hitler, but it's still a scary and dangerous rise of authoritarianism.

Sadly the only country I can flee to is Israel, and they just announced they're naming a bunch of streets and train stations after him. /puke, so there goes that idea.

It's scary for all of us, who aren't part of the Trump cult!

While Trump may not be smart enough to reach the level of Hitler, there are those around him that are smart enough to propel him to that level!

Trump's allies are calling for a purge of the FBI, the SEC is now protecting the same institutions that gave us the 2008 Recession, members of Congress are doing everything they can to bring Muller's investigation to a halt, most if not all of his cabinet positions are filled by people who aren't even qualified to be dog catchers, and his selection of judges for the federal courts consists of totally incompetent party members(much like Hitler's "Peoples Court&quot !

And his political adviser, Stephen Miller, is a college friend of white supremacist Richard Spencer, and a self hating Jew!!!

11. As a gen-xer I had a direct connection to WWII
Fri Dec 29, 2017, 02:17 AM
Dec 2017

My grandfather fought in the Royal Navy in WWII. I grew up in the 1980s when people in their fifties had vivid recollections of the war. The media I grew up with was, even then, pretty saturated with WWII imagery. My generation knew for a stone cold fact that the Nazis were the bad guys and the Allies were the good guys. That's just the way it was.

Young men in their early twenties today have no such connection to WWII. What they have is this: when they were in their early teens they probably played the second and third iterations of the video game series Call Of Duty (which in case you didn't know is one of the biggest video game franchises of all time). The multiplayer component of these games -- which was really their raison d'etre -- put you in the boots of either an Allied soldier or Axis soldier (your choice) and let you have at it.

In other words, while I grew up with the ingrained knowledge that Nazis were Very Bad People, the generation that came after me -- born after the fall of the Berlin Wall, one of the last remnants of the decades-long fallout from WWII -- grew up with the idea that the Axis and the Allies were basically just interchangeable characters in a war that happened a long time ago, and that being either one was a fun thing to do.

Millennials simply don't have as deep a connection to or understanding of the evils of Naziism. It's not necessarily their fault, just the time they grew up in. But it explains why many of them apparently think that playing Nazi is a simple act of rebellion designed to shock grumpy grown-ups, like how people from my generation used to shock their parents by going to Marilyn Manson concerts (remember when they used to ban those?)

It's just that instead of dressing up like spooky goths, these young men go online and spout racist and misogynist garbage. So edgy!

They enjoy it because it gets a rise out of people, and in turn that makes them feel powerful, like they have some control over the world. They don't understand the devastating real-life consequences that such behavior can lead to -- the kind of consequences that exterminated millions of men, women and children in concentration camps, or put my grandfather, when he was in HIS early twenties, on a destroyer in the North Sea dodging U-boat torpedoes.

But there are plenty of truly evil people out there who DO understand, and they are more than happy to groom and manipulate these kids and use them for their own ends. The Internet makes this task exponentially easier.

She gets rape threats on a regular basis, and you can't play more than a couple of games in a row without hearing some prepubescent boy screaming racial slurs. While, in their heads, they're "training".

Where the hell are their parents? When it takes a credit card to buy a game online, and all game shops enforce age limits on games (most of the best shooters are rated M for mature, which means 17+ to buy them) then that means that the parents are buying them games and do not or can not monitor their use at all.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that all children mature at a different rate. I graduated high school at 17 and immediately joined the Air Force. I've played with some kids I knew were 16 or 17 and they were mature and solid players.

But the VAST majority of the most hateful speech I hear is from YOUNG male voices.

They're being poisoned with an internet culture that praises shock and exclusivity.

I have heard from my nephew about how raunchy the conversation can be. A couple of years ago, my son wanted to play on-line Minecraft and I asked my nephew who is older how he could do that and he told me that an 9 yr old shouldn't be online with other players. We have held him off but this year we did get him prepaid cards for Xbox so that he can buy a subscription to Xbox Gold or other games.. He also has an I-tunes and visa gift card. I'm guessing a lot of it happens this way, parental ignorance and gift cards. My only consolation for now is that his Xbox is in the living room and he is never left home alone so we can monitor... but for kids who are a bit older and home alone after school or have game systems in their bedrooms, I could see how the situation you describe happens without parental knowledge.

They still do. Now so many are becoming more outspoken about white supremacy, people are suddenly "worried." The fact is they have always been around, they have always been very dangerous, and like a cancer, they have been eating away at all sides of the political spectrum in various ways. There is also the "reclaim the swastika" crowd who have blurred several lines and created misdirection, whether intentional or not, I am not sure, but it has also added to the "fascination" many have with the Nazis.
