Apple issues apology for secretly slowing older iPhones

Apple on Friday issued an apology to consumers after it acknowledged it purposely slowed down older iPhones. Earlier this month, the tech giant said it slowed down older iPhones to avoid unexpected shutdowns caused by battery fatigue, which prompted an angered reaction on social media.

Apple made its battery disclosure after independent researchers published their findings that the company secretly slowed down older iPhones. At least eight class action lawsuits have been filed against the tech giant for allegedly defrauding users, including in France, where "planned obsolescence" is outlawed.

Apple said it will reduce the price of out-of-warranty battery replacement from $79 (€66) to $29 (€24) for the iPhone 6 model and those released afterward.

Julia Calderone, an associate editor at US-based Consumer Reports magazine, criticized the company for its response to the battery disclosure, saying: "How charitable of them. Maybe Apple should fix the iOS that destroyed my battery life instead of making me buy a new battery for a phone that's barely a year old."

law against planned obsolescence? Want to know more about that.

I am on my fourth MacBook and physically it does not hold up as well as the earlier ones.

...batteries deplete based on usage. If you use your phone a ton, it’ll deplete faster. If it depletes too far, depending on what you’re doing at the time, the battery may not be able to provide the proper power to perform at peak. If that happens, the phone shuts down due to power loss.

So there’s a choice to be made. Phone shutting down unexpectedly (unexpectedly on the consumer’s end) or phone slowing down when the power draw is too much (not all the time, just when needed to keep operating).

This isn’t something Apple should apologize for. It’s a solution to a problem and was in patch notes. Users can see when the battery has reached a certain level of depletion in the Settings app.
