Putting Things In Perspective.....
The current population of the world is about 7.4 billion people. The current population of the US is around 326 million. https://www.census.gov/popclock/ If the U.S. magically ceased to exist, there would still be 7.1 billion people in the world. This alone should point out our insignificance.
Our president makes jokes about climate change because it's cold where he is. Meanwhile the rest of the planet-you know, where those other 7.1 billion people live-bakes. Their water supplies are threatened by climate change. Their food supplies are threatened by climate change. The very land they occupy, for those in coastal areas, is threatened. Their security, safety and stability is threatened. These pressures will only continue to grow. Look at the disruption refugees from a relatively minor climate change induced conflict in Syria created. Maybe the biggest threat of climate change is the potential for global conflict.
How long would you go without water? Without food? Without safety and security? What would you be willing to do to guarantee your food, water, safety or security? What do you think makes the other 7.1 billion people in the world different than Americans? Or you?
If we don't head these problems off and provide safety, security, food and water to people in need, there will be no way to insulate ourselves from the unrest and conflict that will result. How many bombs can you drop? How high can you build a wall? And is that the way a civilized society deals with these issues in the first place? Don't you think the other 7.1 billion people will have a say in the way things work out? We simply can't go it alone and it can't be simply "our way".
Think about these things the next time Trump and his supporters thump their chests, yell "America First", deny climate change, drop a few more environmental regulations. Where are we going as a society and what will we do when we get there?
