(297,436 posts)well. 12 years in upper state New York at the foot of the Adirondacks until I retired to this Island in 2010.
Do not miss the winters!

(63,221 posts)minutes north of Utica and they said it's 10 below without the wind chill. I remember it was frequently in the double digits below zero when I was growing up. Even though Boston gets cold, it never gets THAT cold! Happy New Year!

(297,436 posts)chills! lol
I was in Little Falls, New York.. so many of my friends are there.. I moved there in '98 from Kaua'i because I wanted to be near my sister. She taught school at the Elementary.
Looks like Little Falls is about 30 minutes SE from Utica!
I remember when it was -20 below with the wind chill factor. I would write letters that it was like living in a damn freezer chest! Always said it was for hearty souls! Hope your parents are nice and Warm!
You're in Boston now?
Happy New Year, smirky!

(63,221 posts)I am in Boston now, but went to college near the Canadian border (St. Lawrence Univ) and then moved to Boston, then San Francisco, then NYC and now back in Boston 5 years. I don't like the cold in winter or the heat in summer, but I love the spring and fall. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything!
Happy New Year Cha! Mahalo!

Kick some of that 74 stuff up here, LOL. Of course, if nothing else, we're grateful the cold kills a hell of a lot of mosquitoes.

(16,201 posts)Those nice 55 degree high days in spring, I'll be out prepping my gardens in T-shirt and shorts. After the winter, like today where I was leaf blowing the fresh snow from my driveway in wind and 11 degree temps, 55 seems quite nice.

(25,462 posts)I get home and usually have to peel them off due to heat and humidity.
I avoid wearing jeans outside as much as possible too. Shorts year round outside.
If it is cold in my house, I wear jamas and fuzzy socks. My house has no insulation. South Texas.

It's -12 but with windchill feels like -22.

(205,728 posts)We're in NE NY, closer to Canada than NYC, and all over the region we're experiencing record lows. My poor dog (he's on the short side, a Brussels Griffon) does not enjoy it out there, just sits down and I have to go out and pick him up. He doesn't like snow to begin with, or rain, come to that. And I'm trying to stay in so I can get over the flu, but nature does call. He has his own cleared area, so it's not like he has to wade in it, but he slipped the other day and he has a long memory. Stay warm!
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,494 posts)Then, nightly lows to follow of 4, 1, 7 and 8-deg. I'm warning all my friends about ground freeze and danger of pipes freezing (typically freezes at the meter here) and to keep a slow drop going.
Anyone using portable electric heaters, be sure to feel the cords and outlets for significant heating. I have two going now and try to watch them like a hawk. As a former volunteer firefighter, there's nothing worse than a house fire in this type weather.

(5,998 posts)Last night around 7pm, it was -3 with a -22 windchill.
I was out on my deck, wearing a hoodie over my sweatshirt, grilling ribeyes and frequently dashing indoors to finish off the mashed potatoes.
Was using my gas grill, which managed to get the cooking temp. up to around 600, so I kept the lid shut as much as possible to avoid heat loss.

(40,416 posts)That is pretty standard for this time of the year.
Thankfully my oil tank has plenty of heating oil and my old furnace is in fine fit. Just added 300 gallons heating oil. Oy! $800.00!!

(6,915 posts)but no wind chill. We're supposed to get to 12, with a feels like of -2.

(5,998 posts)To avoid a burst pipe, open doors on any cabinets that contain plumbing and are on an 'outside wall'.
Maybe also keep a faucet dripping if it's extremely cold.

(9,761 posts)Best thing about this extreme cold is it may kill off the tick problem we had here the last couple years. Last spring and summer were awful. It'll kill the excess mice and chipmunks that the ticks feed on.
