Of these potential 2020 candidates, whom would you support and why?

Gov Andrew Cuomo NY
Gov Jay Inslee WA
Sen Kristen Gillenbrand NY
Sen Sherrod Brown OH
Rep Joe Kennedy III MA
Sen Elizabeth Warren MA
Sen Tim Kane VA

I have intentionally left out Sanders, Clinton, and Biden. We need to move forward, not backward.

to not vote and allow their candidates to win from low turnout. The problem is that when we don't vote for a candidate usually that means we aren't voting for Senators or Reps either. There was a large enough contingent of those who wouldn't vote for Hillary because they never thought anybody would elect Trump and look what we got - we lost the Senate and Trump slunk in.

Of course, there was Comey, cheating, lying....

As Obama said, and this is similar to the talk AAs have with their kids, we have to be way better than they are to win. He implied this is because of gerrymandering, they hold the cards now (all 3 branches and states), cheating, lying, etc.

They will find new ways.

True, common campaign wisdom is you don't take risks when you are ahead, but there will always be the last minute Swiftboating.

from Martin O'Malley:
'Today I am excited to support Cindy Boatwright For South Carolina House District 99 here in Charleston. Let’s go knock on doors and win back your state!'

"Dont be distracted by Trumps attacks on the free press. Fight the tax bill.
Don’t let them bankrupt America." --- Martin O'Malley
#Democrats2018 #OMalley2020

OMalley tells Dems not to fear Trump.
'Former Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley is urging Democrats not to be afraid of President Trump.

"Donald Trump is a self-basting turkey," said O’Malley, who recently launched a new PAC focused on helping Democrats win state and local races. "A lot of people who voted for him are embarrassed about his behavior."

In a recent interview with The Hill, O’Malley explained why he believes his new PAC can yield big results for his party — and why Trump doesn’t represent the future of the United States.

Pointing to a Democratic sweep in local elections last month, the former Maryland governor said his party’s economic message is steering the country back on course after Hillary Clinton’s loss to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

"I was elated, but not surprised by New Jersey and Virginia," O’Malley said, referring to two of the states in which Democrats saw major victories in November.'>>>

e.mail from MO'M 11/21/17:
I wanted to make sure you heard about our exciting news: Last Thursday, I launched Win Back Your State PAC. Our PAC will primarily focus on helping state and local Democratic candidates win elections nationwide in 2018 and beyond, while also aiding federal candidates.

There are 36 Governor's offices up for grabs in 2018, which will play a vital role in the next Congressional redistricting in 2020. If we want to protect against things like the latest Republican tax plan, which favors private jet owners over working families, then we must succeed in winning back our states.

Democrats made huge electoral gains this year, especially in this month's elections. But, we have more work to do to win back our states and win back our country. Join us.

Yours,

Martin O'Malley

Gov Andrew Cuomo NY - strategic wise, possibly too many skeletons
Gov Jay Inslee WA - dont know enough about
Sen Kristen Gillenbrand NY - flip flopper on issues (formerly pro-gun), the right will use that somehow anyway. I dont quite trust people not strong in their ideology and who shape shift with public opinion
Sen Sherrod Brown OH - dont know enough about
Rep Joe Kennedy III MA - absolutely! My instincts tell me he is trustworthy and he believes 100% in what comes out of his mouth.
Sen Elizabeth Warren MA - use to be big Warren supporter, threw hillary under bus, so no
Sen Tim Kane VA - against abortion, would have to see how he voted in past

Adam Schiff...I’d vote for him too.

But no matter what, I’d vote for the dem despite preferences.

We survived two Roosevelts, two Bushes, no problem with another Kennedy.

Pretty sure the Kennedy name recognition and family ties will resound with a lot of older voters. His relative youth and energy will resound with a lot of millenials. He seems pretty progressive, if not as much as Sanders, Warren or Sherrod, but good enough to attract a lot of people who are looking leftward in this semi-fascist time.

But, as I said, I'll vote for ANY Democratic candidate if the alternative is Bozo.

I guess I'm with Biden until a better alternative comes along, the only thing that matters is that any candidate be nationally competitive and Biden will be competitive places that Hillary wasn't but it's all for naught if any of our rising stars deliver an identical electoral map to that of 2016 which I fear is the best possible outcome for most of them. I don't know that Biden can win without Obama but if I had to take a chance on any of the presumptive nominees it would have to be him.

For president: someone in their late 50s/early 60s with extensive (at least 10 years) experience in government at the state or federal level. Some of that experience should be in an administrative position. I want someone who is well-versed in how the federal government and its agencies operate because they are going to have to undo the mess the current administration is making.

For vice-president: someone 5-10 years younger, also with some government experience at the state or federal level.

I'll support who ever winds up on the ticket, though - once we get past 2018.

Sen Sherrod Brown OH - I like him, but let's see how he does in his election

Rep Joe Kennedy III MA - not familiar except for the name

Sen Elizabeth Warren MA - always a strong economic and social message. Not sure how she would play as a candidate, but one of my favorites

I think a Warren/Brown or Brown/Warren ticket would excite.

which isn't all that wise.

Sanders is the most popular politician in America. I believe that he'd win if he ran again.

The three? If Donald Fucking Moron Trump can win, I'm not afraid to put lesser-known people forward.

If I, and millions of other progressives, have to be limited to establishment candidates, I can guarantee that enthusiasm and involvement will also be limited, which will lead to more losses.

Democrats should be, in my opinion, more invested in moving forward than in protecting and defending the old, failed guard.

But that's just my perspective. I'm sure no other voters out there would agree.

Those three are not. Teachout barely was a blip on the radar in the two elections she ran in.

The other two have held state representative offices for a short time (with Turner getting crunched in the one statewide election she ran in). in the one election Turner ran and won, she was unopposed.
Flores lost elections for Lt. gov, and for congress (in the primary).
What do any of those three have that show that they can win on a national level?

Tue Jan 2, 2018, 02:58 PM
Jan 2018

that attract me:

1. They are outside the establishment
2. They are women
3. Two are also WoC
4. They are NOT neoliberals

More and more voters are looking for these qualities; too many "well-known politicians" don't have them.

Maybe Trump was well-known to some tv watchers; I admit that he wasn't well known to me, although I was aware of him in the periphery.

If I have to stick to "well known," some of my top choices are not at all practical; they are too "controversial," meaning they are too willing to publicly step outside proscribed political boundaries. Sanders would be my obvious first choice for "well known." My own Senator Merkley would be another.

I'd rather leave them both in the Senate and go forward with fresher, and therefore less well-known, choices.
