General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIt so cold on the farm the chickens are hanging out in front the heaters.
I fed them extra and they did not want to go out today.
The cattle are hanging around the pole barns to keep away from the wind. We gave them extra hay.
The wood burning stove is feeling good.
It feels like like the high 20's outside and we will a hard freeze.
This is better then 100 plus we had in the summer.
Now for some blackeye peas and pork chops.
Happy New Year everyone.
It is long underwear weather.

(40,416 posts)That's chicken for "it's cold as hell out here!"
Stay warm, and keep those animalcules warm, too.
And a sincere Happy New Year to you, too. You and your animalcules.

The pole barns were worth the work.
We put down hay for the cattle to lay on in the pole barns.

North Houston is not supposed to be mid 20's
Happy New Year.

(1,588 posts)I have smart chickens.
A few stayed out during the day but most of hens went back in and stayed.
The rooster stayed out.
He seemed to enjoy the weather.

(1,588 posts)Baby ducks.
Thinking of a water tank for the cattle.
A few ducks would be nice.
Sixteen babies.
Hope you get some sleep.

They were all ordered back about a month ago.
I got a good wife who puts up with me, not sure how that will pan out after this one.
Stay warm...

(1,588 posts)They were rescue animals.
The previous owners did not think about having a rooster around?
Three hens and rooster.

(26,293 posts)at lowes last week for 129 and its keeping my bedroom a nice even temp plus it does not stink now that the new smell has burned off it unlike a kerosene one which put out some nasty fumes.
Another benefit is that I lose power it will stay warm still for a few hours and a regular electric one would not.

(1,588 posts)Just needed a match.
Those old gas heaters kept a house warm.
My farm house has them.
I think people used to live in colder houses.
Old houses had very little to no insulation.
cstanleytech
(26,293 posts)frigid in some areas of houses with old heaters like that.

(1,588 posts)All the bedrooms have them.
Just seems to work.
A ceiling fan on reverse helps.

(2,405 posts)and no money to get someone to put in a new higher amp breaker and I am no electrician, so in the house they go for the next 4 days.
It is all good as there is no better therapy than baby animals...imo.

(70,126 posts)some power plays in the coop led to a couple cockerels and their ladies being shut out of the coop. brought in a couple w pretty frozen feet. i am sure they will be fine, but this is no kinda weather to be playing power politics.

Chickens do not always get along.
The dog and I made sure everyone was in.
We had wind chill of -45C all last week.

(1,588 posts)We are made for heat.
We have mild winters over all.
The farm is colder then the city.
I was in real cold weather in the Army.
This is cold enough for me.
The chickens looked shocked.

(32,822 posts)Breathing is an adventure in pain. Your face feels like every pore has a needle in it. Your hair hurts. You can feel your eyeballs freezing. You have to be constantly on the move or you'll start freezing up. If you have arthritis or bursitis you're in agony.

(36,745 posts)Smartest cat that has ever owned me.
Not as bad as 3 or 4 years ago here in MI, but still bloody effin cold.
I think the lowest I saw it about 3 years ago here was -19 deg F. We are staying a bit warmer due to the Great Lakes not yet being fully frozen over. They warm the air from the west just a bit until they freeze over.
Demtexan
(1,588 posts)Our homes and pipes are not built for that.
We had month of temps below freezing for a month once.
All my plants died in the yard.
Pipes bursts all over.
It was a mess.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)-19 deg F was pushing it for many of us here. A lot of water mains didnt like it.
My house itself is actually built to handle Northern Canada winters...thank God.
Demtexan
(1,588 posts)We do not even clothes for that kind of weather.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)Us polar bears up here are acclimated to handle it.
I remember when I was in FL a couple of years ago. Went swimming in the hotel pool when it was 55 deg outside. All I had to say to commentators is that Im from MI. I didnt mention the pool was heated...LOL.
Looks like FL is gonna get nailed in the next day or so. Up go citrus prices!

(1,588 posts)A short warm fall.
A usually mild winter.
A short spring.
At 55 we need a jacket.
That first cold front feels really good.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)Hope it blows out of there soon and you warm up. Otherwise it will be no fun with water pipes, etc, etc.

(19,253 posts)-50F wind-chill. My chickens are doing ok, but they also refuse to leave the heat lamps. Theyve been locked up indoors since early Dec. All the cattle in the area are locked up indoors, except the herd of bison down the road; they're veritable tanks of meat and fur. My woodburner is also roaring, but even so the propane furnace still kicks on to supplement it every few hours.
200 miles from here in northern MN it was -35F and -70F wind-chill.
Still not as bad as the winter of 1996, when our farm was -40F without wind chill. They hit -70F air temp up in Tower, MN that night!

(23,322 posts)of the coop for a couple weeks. Too much snow. I keep laying down fresh straw for them to pick through to keep them busy. I'll pick up a head of cabbage at the store tomorrow, hang it from a rope and let them play tether ball with it. I feel badly for them this time of year but they always seem to get through winter unscathed. I've got two girls who are turning 11 this March. It is supposed to get down to 6 degrees tonight...❄️🐔

(26,403 posts)Going to be mid to low 20's here in SW Austin tonight. High barely got into the mid 30's today and it's going to be the same tomorrow. Nice round of pellet snow last night (just a skiff)
Agree with what you said about the area is just not built or used to even this type of short cold snap. Best thing is it's the first time in several years where we'll have a hard freeze long enough to kill off most of the noxious insects. (Freeze eggs, etc.).
Just wish it was a tad wetter - otherwise bluebonnets and other flowers are not going to be very bright this next spring.

(10,168 posts)Our low tonight is -6. We are just locked into this until next weekend. We'll get a short reprieve for a couple of days, and then more frigid temps after that. Sounds like most of January is going to suck.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)That is a good thing evaporation wise.
Greybnk48
(10,168 posts)It's been a while, but the last time it happened (2014) it kept our
weather really cold into late in the season, which is hell for us gardeners with a short growing season as it is!
I was watching a news show earlier today and they were showing that Niagara Falls is in the process of freezing. I'd like to see that!
