In deep-red Texas, Republicans will have to fight for every congressional seat in next year's midterm elections. For the first time in 25 years, Democrats are running in all of Texas 36 congressional districts, according to documents filed with the Texas Secretary of States office.
Mark Jones, political science fellow at Rice Universitys Baker Institute, says those filings set a record for the number of Democratic challengers in an era of Republican dominance, and are a departure from 2016 when eight Republican-held congressional seats went uncontested by Democrats.
We are seeing a groundswell of unusually high support and mobilization among progressive Democrats who are really angered by the Trump administration, Jones said.
But, Democrats arent just gunning for congressional seats. According to preliminary numbers from the Texas Democratic Party, Democrats are running in 89 percent of the seats in the Texas House and 88 percent of the seats in the Texas Senate. Both are the highest percentages the party has mustered since at least 1992.
We are seeing Democrats come out to run not only for the goal of challenging and doing something to voice their opposition to President Trump, Jones said. But we are seeing Democrats come out in several districts where, in the past, Democrats had no chance whatsoever and had difficult time recruiting top-quality candidates.

(1,474 posts)Could he be the one that makes Texas Blue? I am from Texas and believe if we fight for it, Texas can turn Blue. People here are not idiots so much as they are misinformed and unmotivated. Thomas Perez is doing a very good job of helping Dems contest all congressional seats. If Alabama can elect a Dem, why not Texas? Dubious voting machines, gerrymandering, and voter suppression are great obstacles, but Texas can be blue. Motivation to vote is of prime importance.

(6,133 posts)I hope that we can create something more in the end. We need a stable and sensible country, and one in which everyone votes. The Democrats will win forever with that.
I hope that this wind at our backs will work for ever.

(50,254 posts)Yes, it would have been better if Dem turnout had been higher.
But the party is as responsible for that as the voters.
The Democratic Party campaign organizations and the Obama Administration didn't take the midterms seriously and didn't do what you HAVE to do to win midterms: run a national campaign focused on firing up the progressive base.
If nothing else, there should have been national ads reminding the base of what had been achieved and what COULD be achieved if the Right were to be stopped. There should have been a reminder that, if we did well in the midterms, the bad parts of the ACA could be fixed, and that perhaps a jobs bill could be passed.
Instead, there was no national effort of any importance, and the Right's narrative was left totally unchallenged.
In off-year elections, the base is all that matters. There is no "centrist vote" in midterms, and no party prospers in midterms by distancing itself from its base.

(3,622 posts)As a former Texas resident, alternately district 6 or 12 (gerrymandering ) I was always frustrated by the lack of options.
Due to the gerrymandering it may not be possible to make a difference on the Congressional races but hopefully this will cause an uptick in the state-wide races and down-ballot elections.
Keeping my fingers crossed for all ya'll.

(45,452 posts)Showing up and listening to people is the most important part. Sure some of these Dems won't win this time. But you best believe they will build up constituencies and interest for future campaigns and make the Republicans spend money in what they used to take for granted as safe red districts.
We've seen it before when our side is energized and their side is not, a lot of Dems have been elected in unlikely places very recently.
