Congressman Devin Nunes has been running around Washington acting like a guilty maniac for most of 2017. He used his role as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee to try and sabotage the Trump/Russia investigation, and even got removed from legislation, which caused him to launch his own rogue investigation into clearing Trump.
New evidence now suggests that Nunes was in on the Trump-Russia conspiracy from the beginning, and Laurence Tribe, Harvard Law Professor, thinks Nunes is going to be arrested for it.
Laurence Tribe, Harvard Law Professor and one of the most widely respected legal experts in the U.S., tweeted last week Nunes is headed to federal prison.

Thats why they decided to be Republican politicians, isnt it? Its the whole point; its the entire party platform.

(4,429 posts)it would be to the Feds and there isn't much rape there. Moreover, given who he is, the system would take extra care to protect him from sexual violence.
As someone who has worked with men who have been raped in prison, I'm glad of that.

(10,418 posts)A pardon by Trump would give the appearance of guilt by association. He might not want to take that chance. Trump is not untouchable even with his ability to pardon.

(5,995 posts)Nunes would be a real pardon that will put the spotlight on Trump himself. If there's no personal upside, Trump can't be bothered.

KTM
(1,823 posts)The "fair enough" was in regards to Walt's request to Tribe, "I wish you wouldnt use language suggesting I approve of his behavior." Otherwise, he still makes largely the same point as his original re-tweet and statement that was the basis for the bluedot article:
Thats not much of a difference from "I believe his conduct crossed some criminal lines and wont be surprised to see him indicted."
dem4decades
(11,296 posts)" I just dont think fortune-telling that someone is headed to federal prison is helpful. We dont even know hes under investigation."
To which Tribe replied "
"Fair enough, @waltshaub. I know you disapprove of Nunes behavior as much as I do. I shouldve just said I believe his conduct crossed some criminal lines and wdnt be surprised to see him indicted in the end. That wdve been less incendiary. Point taken."
It was walked back.
KTM
(1,823 posts)I suppose it cant be proven to be one or the other parts of that statement that "fair enough" was directed towards without asking Tribe, but my feeling is that he was apologizing for insinuating that Shaub agreed with Nunes actions.
Regardless, the original statement made was that Nunes was headed to federal prison. The new statement is "I believe his conduct crossed some criminal lines and wont be surprised to see him indicted."
Coming from a Harvard Law professor and widely respected legal expert, I dont think the new wording changes much of what was meant, and is not at all what I would consider "walking back" from the statement.

(22,670 posts)Nune's could be in for a plea deal if he waffles on Ryan for also obstructing justice because he knew the RNC and others were in on this. Imagine tRump, Pence, Ryan, Hatch, Tillerson, Mnuchin, and who knows who else all being taken out at once by law enforcement and Mueller having to follow the constitutional chain of command down to the only person who wasn't guilty of treasonous behavior. We could be looking at a president Matti in 2018.

(145,321 posts)This RWNJ conspiracy theory should be dead https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/01/02/republicans-steele-dossier-conspiracy-theory-was-dealt-a-big-blow-this-weekend/?utm_term=.2b1e74b15e04
At a November House hearing featuring Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) offered a detailed conspiracy theory tying the Steele dossier to the origins of the Russia investigation. We know the Clinton campaign and the [Democratic] National Committee paid for .?.?. the dossier, Jordan began. And it sure looks like the FBI was paying the author of that document. And it sure looks like a major political party was working with the federal government to then turn an opposition research document that quoted some National Enquirer story into an intelligence document, take that to the FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] court so that they could then get a warrant to spy on Americans associated with President Trump's campaign. That's what it looks like.
At the time, Sessions himself dismissed Jordan's dot-connecting and shunned calls for a new investigation. And now this theory has been dealt another significant blow.
The New York Times on Saturday added to the narrative of how the Russia investigation came to be. And more importantly, it filled in details of how it came to focus on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 election.
The Times reported that George Papadopoulos, the Trump campaign adviser who recently pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and is cooperating with investigators, helped put the focus on the campaign. According to the Times's report, Papadopoulos told an Australian diplomat over drinks in May 2016 that Russia had thousands of emails that would hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign. After the DNC's emails were leaked two months later, Australian officials reportedly relayed to U.S. authorities what Papadopoulos had said.
