Former Vice President Joe Biden will escort Sen.-elect Doug Jones (D-AL) to his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday morning, according to CNN and local reports from Alabama.
While the state colleague typically accompanies a new senator to the swearing-in ceremony, Jones did not ask Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) to attend, AL.com and WAAY TV reported Tuesday evening. A Jones spokesperson did not immediately return TPMs request for confirmation.
The former Democratic Vice President is a family friend of Jones and campaigned for him during his Senate bid in October. Following a contentious special election to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions seat in the Senate, Jones was officially certified as Alabamas next senator last Thursday, despite an 11th-hour attempt by his opponent former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore to block the certification of the election.
Jones ceremony is scheduled for noon on Wednesday and he plans to do his swearing-in on a personal family Bible, according to AL.com.

(2,509 posts)That they've been friends for 40 years. FWIW I think it was an excellent choice.

(37,748 posts)i think the choice should be that of the oath-taker. But I get it... someone will always find a reason to complain regardless of what is being used as the device.
No doubt, an oath on a any stack of papers holds the same amount of hot air.
But they don't have to swear on the bible. It can be anything.
I do like the idea that they should have to swear on the Constitution though.

(27,843 posts)However, this is Alabama, and I'm sure the people who pushed through to elect Doug Jones would prefer a Bible, and frankly, I'm fine with that. I like the idea of the Constitution as a future wish, though.

(6,537 posts)But changed parties MID-TERM back in the 90's; couldn't even serve out his term as a Dem! Pissed me off to no end as I had voted for him. Needless to say, I never voted for him again.

(18,470 posts)...were on the side of the Confederacy back in the Civil War days, opposed to women being able to vote, or opposed to civil rights legislation. All while ignoring the fact that all the racist flotsam left the Democratic party generations ago and went right straight into the arms of the Republican party. All while ignoring the existence of Nixon's southern strategy.

(17,989 posts)In the Senate, where tradition still matters, that's going to sting ole Shelby. Then again, maybe Shelby made it known he wanted no part. Either way, it's interesting.... and a far better choice than having to small talk with a Rethug.

(24,341 posts)It's always a good idea for an incoming Democratic US Senator to choose a prominent Democrat to be there
For Shelby, it avoids the photo-op that the moore-an voters in Alabama are looking to bludgeon him with should he run for re-election
