MineralMan's Three-Thirds Theory of Society

It's very simple:

One-Third Are Assholes
One-Third Are Decent People
One-Third Can Be Convinced to Go Either Way

I came up with that when I was about 20 years old. 52 years later, I've not seen any evidence to the contrary. The decent third needs to start working on the changeable third. Ignore the asshole third...they will never change.

I worked with college students for over 30 years. I can say that they fell into those three categories at about the same rate.

Unfortunately I live in a state where that asshole group is loud and large.

The opinion page in the OKC paper always appeared to be totally right wing in the letters to the editor. Lately people have actually begun to take the bullies that post there to task. It has been heartwarming to see .

...he said that a third were patriots, a third were pro-British, and a third were on the fence, just trying to survive the storm. The same thing was true in 1861--a third of the country was pro-Confederate, a third pro-Union, and a third just going with the flow. There's probably some subliminal factor in humanity itself that makes things turn out this way...your Law of Three Thirds makes as much sense as anything else in sociology or political science...

I recall this backs it up - due to social dissolution, the 1/3 of that society that supported violent genocide managed to get the upper hand

react differently to certain stimulus. Maybe the 1/3 that can go either way don't have as definitive reactions to the stimulus as conservatives and liberals.

the changeable third. I'm not clever enough to do that, I guess. I just have the categories.

Mao said it when asked how many Chinese were communist. He said 30% were for it, 30 against. What you needed was the 40.
