Memphis mega-church pastor's "official statement" on "regretfully" having sex with a 17 year old

CONTEXT: Memphis mega-church pastor admits he molested a minor days before his ‘True Love Waits’ workshop

Official Statement from Andy Savage

http://www.highpointmemphis.com/official-statement-from-andy-savage?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=andysavage

As a college student on staff at a church in Texas more than 20 years ago, I regretfully had a sexual incident with a female high school senior in the church. I apologized and sought forgiveness from her, her parents, her discipleship group, the church staff, and the church leadership, who informed the congregation. In agreement with wise counsel, I took every step to respond in a biblical way.

I resigned from ministry and moved back home to Memphis. I accepted full responsibility for my actions. I was and remain very remorseful for the incident and deeply regret the pain I caused her and her family, as well as the pain I caused the church and God’s Kingdom.

There has never been another situation remotely similar in my life before or after that occurrence. The incident happened before Amanda and I were engaged and I shared every aspect of this situation with her before I asked her to marry me. I further disclosed this incident to Chris Conlee before coming on staff at Highpoint and have shared with key leaders throughout my tenure.

This incident was dealt with in Texas 20 years ago, but in the last few days has been presented to a wider audience. I was wrong and I accepted responsibility for my actions. I was sorry then and remain so today. Again, I sincerely ask for forgiveness from her and pray for God’s continued healing for everyone involved.

1. Neither Andy Savage or Highpoint are in Wikipedia.

Which seems strange. Googling either gets a bunch of hits, Savage has written some books and been putting himself out in public for years. Highpoint, of course, is a megachurch.

I wanted to know just how old Savage was when he took this 17-year-old out for that drive. "College student" can be very loose, but a few searches (just scanning a few sites, not intensive) turn up no age or birth date. Not even clues on his personal website or Highpoint's as to what year or era he, for instance, graduated high school or took a first pastoral job. Nothing to enlarge on his statement that he was a "college student"...

3. OK. IF he was really charged with AGGRAVATED statutory rape,

he may have been at least 10 years older. At very least he was an adult who shouldn't have been messing with a high school girl.

I only say "may" because that was 20 years ago and the law may have been changed. But Tennessee's current law for aggravated statutory rape states: "If victim is at least 13 but under 18, and offender is at least 10 years older than victim." Class D felony.

He could also have been charged with a more serious class C felony under "Statutory rape by an authority figure."

*He turned onto a dirt road and continued to drive. There were trees all around. I could not see the main road anymore, from which he turned from. I asked what was back here. He told me they were building a church. I thought, maybe that’s what this was about, maybe he has some secret to tell me, like perhaps he was moving to another church. We reached a dead end and he turned the truck around before putting it in park. We were stopped, and he turned the headlights off. Suddenly, Andy unzipped his jeans and pulled out his penis. He asked me to suck it. I was scared and embarrassed, but I did it. I remember feeling that this must mean that Andy loved me. He then asked me to unbutton my shirt. I did. He started touching me over my bra and then lifted my bra up and began touching my breasts.

After what I believe to have been about 5 minutes of this going on, he suddenly stopped, got out of the truck and ran around the back and to my side before falling to his knees. I quickly buttoned my shirt back up and got out of the truck. Now I was terrified and ashamed. I remember him pleading, while he was on his knees with his hands up on his head, ‘Oh my god, oh my god. What have I done? Oh my god, I'm so sorry. You can't tell anyone Jules, please. You have to take this to the grave with you.’ He said that several times. My fear and shame quickly turned to anger. I had just been manipulated and used. I swore to him I wouldn't tell anyone just to get him to stop. We both got back in the truck. As he drove me home, I don’t remember there being any conversation. I was in shock.

10. If that's so, the statute was changed. The current one

requires a 10-year age gap. Or maybe the report had the "aggravated" charge incorrect.

I did read that description of that unfortunate night, which he apparently admitted widely to and repented. I don't blame the poor girl for getting angry when he fell to his knees and started repenting right there, instead of declaring undying love. Regrettable that her own emotional pain wasn't so quickly exorcised.

I'm glad that his actions are finally being brought to light - hopefully there will be consequences.

4. I was 22 when I met my future wife at church

She had just turned 19 and was a freshman in college. I worked with the high school youth at the time on a voluntary basis. I had just moved to the community.

A few years later after we had dated, got engaged, and were married; the youth director of the church at the time characterized our marriage as if I had met my wife while working with her in the youth group. I quickly corrected the timing. I recognized that as a line that would never be crossed irrespective of whether the high school youth was over 18 or not.

I wonder what I would have done if I had moved to the community in Feb.. instead of Nov. My wife would have been a high school student then, and I would have met her in my role as a youth adviser. Chances are strong we would have never been married.

Also first "dates" usually don't involve driving someone into the woods and behaving in this fashion. I took my wife to a really nice restaurant, and back to the dorm were she shook my hand and we parted.
