BY JOHN BOWDEN - 01/06/18 10:53 AM EST
Veteran Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein on Friday accused Republicans of trying to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, condemning a criminal referral for the author of a controversial dossier on President Trump.
In an interview with CNN, Bernstein said that Republican senators' move to request a criminal investigation of former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele was a "glowing red herring." Steele was behind research included in the dossier of unverified claims linking Trump to Russia.
Its not just a distraction or a red herring, its a glowing red herring in the Washington swamp, Bernstein said.
Bernstein argued that a letter sent from Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) to the Justice Department asking Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate whether Steele lied to investigators about his contacts with journalists was another "distraction" to shift attention away from the Mueller probe and the Trump administration.
The two senators said they believe Steele lied to investigators during the course of the investigation into the dossier. Some of the claims in the dossier have been proven true with public evidence, while others remain unverified.

(45,003 posts)rather Trump hopes to intimidate and silence any further patriotic whistleblowers.
Same with his Bannon/Wolff lawsuits. The only tactics Trump knows are bully tactics
and they only go so far.

(32,084 posts)There's no way in hell the UK would extradite Steele, especially to be subjected to a kangaroo court. And, Grassley and Graham know it. It's just more bullshit distraction, as is the money they're going to waste on another investigation of the Clinton Foundation.
Graham took at least $800 K from Russian oligarchs. Got to wonder how much Grassley took. Going to need to expand APX Florence for this bunch of fucking traitors.

(11,885 posts)Is now who we have to watch out for the most. When their sitting AG openly lies to committee's , and lies on security forms, and launches politically motivated investigations, when his job and duty , and loyalty is to protect the rule of law for the American people, not just a few chosen ones. They'll regret their actions when it all backfires on them, and they become the ones charged. I truly believe their time is coming.
