I just ran out to pick up a few things from the local mini-market and not only was it absolutely freezing, but the wind was so strong it literally almost picked me up off the ground and planted me in a snow bank. It took every ounce of strength I had to resist it.
Coming back, it was like I was walking, but not moving because the wind was so strong. I hate this weather!! I am not leaving the house again until I have to go to work on Monday.

(146,317 posts)Lots more of winter to come.

(63,221 posts)Usually I don't feel like this until mid to late February. We need a break from this extreme cold, wind and snow. It has been too severe for too long at this point.

(146,317 posts)We get it starting tomorrow here in Minnesota. It'll move your way, I guarantee.

(26,263 posts)We are supposedly going to start warming up, tomorrow, with RAIN in the forecast for Thursday. Unfortunately I also saw 'ice to rain' in Wednesday's forecast. Hopefully that won't happen. The last time I saw something like that in the forecast, we lost power for a week.

(17,622 posts)....damned ridge of H pressure is keeping it above normal temps here and the east coast and South are getting all our allotted snow! We have a little on the ground so its white but its been freezing rain for 2 days so its covered with a slick glaze and I'm not even going out to get the mail!

(63,221 posts)Still, I would gladly take it over the negative double digits (w/ wind chill) we are having here in Boston! Stay warm!

(1,369 posts)Hope it moves along to help the East. And we need snow! Have only had about 3 in. in my area so far this season.

(8,203 posts)and my legs sting from the cold when I'm out for just a minute or two to put food out for them in my yard.
I've got shelters--some of which have heating pads--and an electric water heater for them, but not all the cats are using shelters, and they are shivering hard when they come out for food.
For us, the worst cold is coming tonight. I don't know how they are going to survive. I think a kitten I started seeing a week before the blizzard has already perished, as I haven't seen it for two days.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)Why aren't they using the shelters?
femmedem
(8,203 posts)to keep them heated. Most are very feral. The kitten would run away if it saw me looking at it through the window.
But I just checked again, and at least one cat is using a shelter right now. I was able to scoop up two strays (as opposed to ferals) to keep inside until the cold snap breaks.
Three shelters are insulated and heated, and another is insulated with a deep straw bedding. I hope all the cats will relent and use them when it dips to 4 below zero tonight, with wind to boot.
And I sure hope that kitten returns. I saw it just after the blizzard and thought it was a miracle it had made it that long. Fingers crossed it is holed up under my porch.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I hope they make it through this cold snap!

(3,608 posts)No not the kitten.
femmedem
(8,203 posts)The ferocious wind blew snow into a small shelter with two openings. I just cleaned snow and ice out, put down some fresh straw and threw in some dry food and smelly cat treats. I hope that will lure them to safety.
I will post if I get good news about the kitten. It's only about nine or ten weeks old. I'm heartsick for it.
Kirk Lover
(3,608 posts)money. He makes me take it and I just turn around and buy him cat food with it.

(8,203 posts)I always say there are three things that will make me go out to the store no matter how much I want to stay home: no coffee, no toilet paper and no cat food.
Here's a teenager I rescued from under our porch when he was a kitten last summer. He and his littermates have homes and his feral Mom is spayed.

(45,487 posts)It is under a table and covered with a tarp, so they have a nice vestibule for food and water too. We give them hot chicken broth at night and they seem happy. One feral (actually an abandoned pet) moved into our kitchen the minute it dropped below freezing. He likes to sleep on the heating vent.
Thanks for taking care of them.

(17,441 posts)Just kidding. At the grocery store yesterday, everyone in the parking lot was actually groaning in pain when a gust of wind came. Stay warm!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)But we have had a few weeks of frigid temps and very high winds here in Boston, not to mention a major storm and flooding. This is kind of unusual for this early in the season. I am actually quite cozy right now, it only sucks if I have to go outside. Also, I think it's supposed to get back up into the 30's next week, so compared to this it's going to feel like spring!
LuckyCharms
(17,441 posts)I am in the North East as well, so I am certainly used to this kind of weather, but as you say, not this early in the season. I play a little game with myself to get through winter. I count the days remaining until May 1, because I figure that is when the weather is just perfect for working outside. As of today, there are 115 days left, which is only 31% of a year! That will go by quickly! Right? RIGHT????

(6,399 posts)I know we've had cold days like this before but this stretch of it is just longer and harsher than usual. It's nuts. Looks like we just gotta survive Sunday and we'll start warming up. I saw boston itself might see 48 on Thursday!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)we have had so many brutally cold days for such a long stretch. It is very trying, but like you said, I think next week will be much better!

(54,388 posts)The plane passed Newark, passed Manhattan, and was almost at Montauk before it turned around to head to La Guardia. I was worried that the pilot would tell us the winds were too strong, and land us in Rochester, or some place like that, and then tell us they were organizing buses to bring us down to the city. Eventually, we did land at LGA, although almost 2 hours late for a flight that wasn't supposed to last much more than 2 hours in the first place.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)However I think the wind was a problem for them as well. I am so tired of hearing the wind whip outside my window. It's very eerie. I just wish it would die down.

(68,578 posts)It was 9 degrees and windy. It is going to be -10 tonight. My laundry drain is frozen...to tired to get heat tape today so just waiting until Monday when the cold is supposed to break. We are getting a great deal of show on Monday too.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I think the cold will break here too on Mon or Tues (Boston) but I realize what an effect the weather has on my mood. Just running out to do a small errand makes me angry because it's just so brutally cold and windy. I'm fine inside, but if I have to leave the house, it just bums me out. Stay warm!

(68,578 posts)Northeastern Ohio...so east you can almost walk to Pennsylvania. We are moving towards Cleveland...as hubs got a job up there;it is too far to commute-Bedford Ohio. I am looking forward to living in a city. We always chose the burbs for schools...but now my youngest is in college. I love the idea of walking to coffeeshops and other places. Plus Cleveland is great. They have a theater district Playhouse Square- that is second only to New York and Cleveland has many other attractions. The drain in the washing machine is still frozen...pipes are in garage. I am going to put heat tape and insulation in their...cut a hole in the drywall. I am running the cord to a plug in the garage, but my friend who works on electricity will hard wire it in next week...and we will put in a door so there is access to the pipes...should work. It is 30 today so much better.

(5,164 posts)With a fierce wind 2 days post blizzard with 1.5ft snow ❄️. Im worried about my 8 outdoor kitties. I have dug out their feeding area and they have a huge insulated shelter house in the woods. I hope theyre using it. Ive only seen one in person come to eat. A recent Siamese mix stray maybe. We have had very cold weather for over a week now. Its supposed to break on Wednesday finally. I went out yesterday and it was brutal. Im sure yet if Ill go out again till Monday.

I take care of two feral cats who will not come in to the garage or the house. They have a heated cat box on our porch and I switch their water out almost hourly, bit I'm scared for them, it's so freaking cold and had been really cold for more than a week.
It's supposed to warm up later this week. I can't wait.
And I can't even imagine what homeless people are doing to cope with this cold.
