Way to take the wind out of Oprah's excellent speech

...I don't remember her saying she's running for... anything.

This is a popular and accomplished women who deserves more consideration than rending her through the wringer of presidential politics.

We know these kinds of deflections from significant political moments are often deliberate and orchestrated. How about we refrain from enabling the deflectors and focus, instead, on what Ms. Winfrey actually said?

here's a good place to start:

She has said repeatedly that she does not want to run for president. She has used the word never. She has responded back to clarify when others have joked about it. OTHER PEOPLE have hinted, suggested, wanted, implied it BUT SHE HAS NOT!

Until she says she wants to run, why don't people believe her? And why do some jump straight into attacking her before she has said anything about wanting the damn job?

the sheer eloquence of her speech on women and stopping the abuse of power toward women.

Those doing that here need to take a very deep look at themselves and their objectives.

Hope.

We need hope.

A lot of people view her as a highly intelligent person, who is able to interact with, support, and empower other intelligent people.

She's just flat-out more likeable than darn near anyone of any race or gender who has anything resembling a chance to take on the orange one.

Not that it makes sense, or that I think she'll run - she's too smart for that - but I think that is why people hear/read the words but talk about her running regardless.

Whether she runs or not, if I were a candidate, I would want Oprah by my side.

And if she runs, she could very well win. I don't know what her political position is, but she seems to be capable of bringing people together and she seems caring. What she thinks about specific issues, I don't know.

But what a contrast with Trump. She actually seems to have empathy, to know life and to care. What a contrast.

She is a wonderful person and a great speaker. And it is real. It is who she is. If she ran and I agreed with her stances on the issues, I would vote for her based on her personality. I'd have to know her views on the issues before I could say for sure. That goes for any candidate who might run.

She has the humility to be able to do the job and defer to experts on issues.

might have misunderstood your post because of the subject line. I agree with your assessment that they're turning a great speech into "will she run?" as is typical with media. Not everyone who gives a great speech should be president anyway.

I certainly have no idea if Oprah is thinking about running, but I do know this, she is very smart, charismatic, empathetic and is RESPECTED AND FOLLOWED BY MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF WOMEN IN THIS COUNTRY OF EVERY RACE. Oprah DID NOT begin with millions of dollars from her family. She is truly as self-made as anyone in this country.

(I haven't see any negative commentary here about the fact that the guy who owns a basketball team - Mark Cuban has reportedly thought about running for president as a democrat. . . .he was thinking about supporting Trump when Trump began )

I love Oprah, but let's be clear - Democrats need someone who isn't a TV personality.

Further - can we get through 2018 FIRST, before talking about 2020?

Seriously, a huge reason Democrats always end up so screwed is that too many of us think the Presidency is the only thing important to vote for. It's not.

I just don't want her as POTUS. I want a person who is more qualified.
The idea of her candidacy is what is taking the wind out of her speech.

Yes, Oprah gave a good speech. Why not, she is, after all, a performer. We don't need another TV personality blinding us with a good performance but lacking any governmental knowledge or experience. Hell, that's what we have now.

Any attempt by her to enter national politics will bring out of the woodwork every person she lied to and tricked to get a good show and increase her ratings. And yes, I believe she did that because I know two people it happened to.

We, Democrats, have to carefully vet any candidate we put up for the Presidency. Failure will give us another four years of Republican rule.

was approached by Oprah's show to appear to discuss how she placed consequences on a disruptive pre teen. When she was there, the topic was irresponsible parents with her as the example. I know this family very well and it was bullshit. She was humiliated.

Years later, an attorney I was working for was approached regarding a self help grief group he started for young people who had a spouse who died. There are lots of grief groups for seniors who have lost a spouse but none for young people. His wife died at about 30, I think. I told him of my cousin's experience with Oprah's show and told him that I believed that no matter what was told to him to get him to go on the show, there was a good chance that it would be something else when he got there. He knew when the show was supposed to air. He decided not to do it and after he watched the show, he thanked me for the warning. Turned out the show was about getting dates and setting the guests up with dates and nothing about dealing with grief at a young age.

After knowing two examples, I pretty much have the opinion that she is a manipulative, dishonest, self-promoter and it makes me sick to think that Democrats would fall for a cult of personality.

Mon Jan 8, 2018, 03:57 PM
Jan 2018

Oprah gave a powerful speech about the dawning of a new day in combating sexual harassment and abuse, especially for women of color. To distract from this message with guesses about a presidential run only distracts from and dilutes her message. Why would anyone want to do that? It's important to stay focused on the issue at hand. Certainly, it's serious enough.

...the "president" talk is not by chance. People very close to Oprah sent signals almost immediately after the speech... that fanned the flames. Oprah's no dummy; she knows the media and she knew exactly how the story would unfold.
