Theres already been a breakthrough in the renewed talks between the Koreas, with the North agreeing on Tuesday to send its athletes to Februarys Winter Olympics in the South. But one does not need to look far for a reminder that the situation on the Korean Peninsula remains incredibly dangerous. According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump administration officials are quietly debating whether its possible to mount a limited military strike against North Korean sites without igniting an all-out war on the Korean Peninsula.
This bloody nose strategy would entail responding to some provocation by North Korea with a limited strike to demonstrate the potential price of dictator Kim Jong-uns continued misbehavior. Financial Times describes what that might look like:
Presumably, such a strike would be a one-off attack that is immediately followed-up by a presidential announcement that this is a warning shot and nothing more, says Mr. Wilder.

(82,849 posts)It's what the Chinese or the Russians might do that should be the administration's primary consideration. It won't be apparently direct or connected with the kick in the shins, but the various means of retaliation available to the Chinese or the Russians can impose quite a hardship on American business. Surprising how little we're hearing from the titans of industry about how the Trump administration is damaging the American brand all over the world.

(26,045 posts)...letting Trump know that a "limited attack" will be seen by them as an act of war, just as they have said a "pre-emptive" nuclear strike would be.

(1,822 posts)NK has been that crazy guy in the back of the room for years that will say things but you know never will go through w/ it. Heck they "declared war on the US" when Obama was President. Did we see Obama get on twitter and declare that the US has a bigger military than you now we will show you? No, he ignored them like any sane person would. All the NK hype has come about b/c Trump stopped ignoring them like everyone else had and acted like we had failed in our foreign policy regarding them. Its my opinion that the failure will come when Trump uses a strategy like this thinking they wont respond, and they do. I for one am very concerned when reading this, cause I believe that Trump's ego will lead him to believe NK wont respond b/c why would they challenge us w/ our massive military? And when they do respond, well then you have to go to war, which would likely escalate to bringing in most of that region into the conflict as a proxy war.
