outhouse in back. We ate squirrel and rabbit and chicken feet and darn near anything else that was cheap or free and somewhat palatable. I state this to put what follows in context.
Trump's term "Shitholes" has little to do with geography. Certainly, the term---as he uses it TODAY---has much to do with the melanin content of some folks' skin, but no white person should think that they are "safe" from the blind ignorance Trump's hateful language encourages. My mother used to say that "Poor people have poor ways" and "poor ways"---a lifestyle of hardship and "getting by"---are both foreign and extremely distasteful to those " to the manor born".
Those in the penthouses have never eaten chicken backs.
They have never endured the stench of an outhouse in July.
They have never known someone who died of a treatable illness because they had no insurance or money to pay for care.
They know nothing of patching shoes with cardboard or telling friends you've already eaten when you're broke and everyone else is having a burger.
They think all homes have water heaters.
Do not think for one moment, fellow Caucasians, that much of OUR America is not a "shit hole" as far as Trump and his band of moneyed parasites are concerned.

(15,805 posts)His baby sister died because they were too poor to pay for medical care. His dad only had part time work, and his mom bartered and sold milk and eggs. My dad quit school and hunted and fished, gathered wood and collected berries and mushrooms from the woods. They all lived in the kitchen because the wood stove kept them warm in the winter. There was no indoor plumbing and water came from a hand pump. It was a hard life, so I guess we're all "shitholes", too.

(25,862 posts)Okay, so I grew up with indoor plumbing, but despite that we were quite poor when I was growing up. The details aren't that important, certainly not at this remove, other than to say we went hungry at times. That's a vivid memory. Once, when I had a regular babysitting job when I was in high school, I used that money to buy food for the family.
But even then I knew that it wouldn't last forever, and I had a visceral understanding that because I was white, I wasn't going to have as hard a time as some others in our society.
I think the fundamental divide between Trump and his ilk and the rest of us is that we understand to what extent we are all in it together and are willing to help each other out. They think they made it to where they are entirely on their own merit with no comprehension of their advantages.
So I try very hard to appreciate my advantages and my relative (not absolute) wealth. I give a small bit back by volunteering at a local homeless shelter. And I try very hard never to think I'm better than anyone there.

(5,801 posts)want to take us back to those days. For the nonwealthy, at any rate. Seriously, that's the logical end point of their policies, if they succeed in taking away the ability of the Federal government to help people.

(776 posts)to have some of the worst poverty in the modernized world. They really think Trump is going to save them from their shithole? Trump cares about his poor supporters as much as he cares about poor people from all around the world. He thinks they are all lazy dumb sheep from shitholes. A matter of fact i think Trump might just despise poor people so much it might come off as racism when it's just really that they are poor and it disgusts him

(10,718 posts)which I only recently thought back on, as that's the kind of thing we only expect of "immigrants from shithole countries" now. I recall having one set of Sunday clothes, all the rest were hand-me-downs, never more than one pair of shoes, and a mild scolding if I didn't take care of them because they were expensive, and I knew money for new ones didn't grow on trees.
But we were 3 generations from northern European immigrants, with some various mixing with older immigrants. From Norway on my dad's side, which was a "shithole country" when they came over - very hard life for people there, poverty was the basic condition, no electricity or running water most places, poor roads (or no roads) and I can't imagine how rough it was to get through the long winters when small farms and fishing was the basic life.
