U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer says he will not attend President Trump's first State of the Union address.
The bowtie-sporting Democratic congressman tweeted last week that instead of hearing "another destructive, divisive speech" by the president, he will stay in Oregon to meet with constituents.
"Hearing from Oregonians and working together to protect our values and advance policies that actually strengthen our communities is a more productive use of my time," said Blumenauer, 69.
Now in his 11th term in Congress, Blumenauer has long been a vocal opponent of Trump and his agenda.
He introduced legislation last year called the "No TRUMP Act" in response to reports that federal officials have spent taxpayer dollars at Trump-owned properties. He also introduced a bill that would make it easier to remove the president via the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which allows cabinet-level officials to declare the president unfit for duty. Neither bills have a shot at passing the Republican-controlled Congress.

(2,716 posts)Greg Walden, Oregons only Republican in Congress has a good chance of being unseated. There are five Democratic challengers where, in past elections, there was barely ever one. My brother worked for Walden for most of his time in Congress. He now considers himself an independent and doesnt hide his disgust for Republicans who kneel before Trump.
