Last night Democratic candidate Patty Schachtner won a stunning victory in Wisconsin. She beat the Republican by 9 points in a district where Trump won by 17 points. The key to victory?
There is an important lesson here for national Democrats: Schachtner is the sort of candidate who can actually defeat GOP incumbents in red congressional districts this fall. She has deep roots in the community, and she is not a fire-breathing liberal.
Her campaign focused not on attacking Trump but fighting the opioid crisis, improving access to health care and bringing good-paying jobs to the region. She didnt need to talk about the president to benefit from an outpouring of progressive energy and conservative apathy.
Shes the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, a former EMT and a member of the school board. She is also a trustee for the local food pantry and sits on the board for a community center that helps victims of sexual and domestic violence.
The first paragraph of the biographical page on Schachtners website notes that she is a former member of the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association, and that she and her family have enjoyed hunting in Wisconsin for generations. Shes been married to her husband, Joe, for 39 years, and they have six grown children and nine grandchildren.

Democrats don't have to attack Trump because everybody knows about him already. Just show themselves to be half-sane and they are half-way home.

(5,240 posts)2. She ran for her community. Each dem needs to run a campaign focused on the issues of concern to the
state or district. Not every area wants someone who's progressive. There are going to be conservative dems and they need to be welcome, or those states and districts will be represented by repubs.
Those of you here from conservative areas, how do you think dems could make in-roads?
