If Puerto Rico agreed, should New York State try to annex the island?

https://www.quora.com/If-Puerto-Rico-agreed-could-New-York-State-annex-the-island

There is precedent for significantly expanding a state's borders.

Nevada is one of only two states to significantly expand its borders after admission to the Union. (The other is Missouri, which acquired additional territory in 1837 due to the Platte Purchase.)

In 1866 another part of the western Utah Territory was added to Nevada in the eastern part of the state, setting the current eastern boundary.

So that there would be two more democratic senators. I don’t think it does nothing for the house as I don’t think the Puerto Rican population would add another house seat to NY or would it give NY another electoral vote.

it has 3.4 million people. Connecticut has a bit over 3.5 million and 5 reps.

Regardless of population there will only be 435 reps in the house. I don’t know if adding 3 Million people will give NY more of that pie when they already have the 3rd most. And if they do add a district, what state do they steal from? Let’s justvsay it’s Ohio or Michigan. The republican led government would just Split democratic districts and merge them with strong conservative ones.

I don't know where the marginal seats are at. For two censuses in a row NC was on the margin. Once NC got the seat over Utah, the second time it didn't. The smaller a state is the harder it is for it to lose out on a seat so it likely would be larger states not smaller ones where the seats would come from.

Puerto Rico has 3.5 million people. Utah and Nevada have 3 million each and 4 representatives each.

I agree that statehood would be better but maybe annexation could be a first step to statehood. There are many states that have split into two in the past.

3 Million people wouldn’t really put a dent on NY’s already huge population. The house is only allowed 435.

it already has the keys and some islands with no road to them. It could also annex the USVI.

We have our own patriotic sense, our own history and our own culture. That's actually a bigger hurdle to statehood than anything else, unless we can be like Quebec, which is "a nation within a united Canada"... a special state with its own idiosyncrasy inside the American political structure. That, or independence.

What we don't need is the current colonial relationship any longer.

The added political power of New York could overcome that opposition and maybe help as a first step in that direction.
