McConnell: Democrats holding country 'hostage'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blasted Democrats in a floor speech Thursday night over their threats to block a House-passed bill funding the government, saying they are holding the country "hostage" over illegal immigration.

"We ought to pass this resolution and we ought to get back to work," he said.

McConnell spoke a little more than an hour after the House approved a bill to fund the government. Without new legislation from Congress, the government will shut down on Saturday.

Democrats and Republicans are battling in the court of public opinion over who would be to blame for the shutdown.

McConnell said it would be Democrats, who he charged were shoving aside veterans and children by opposing the House bill, which includes a six-year extension of the children's health insurance program.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) fired back that McConnell is "looking to deflect blame but it just won't work."

"Our leader, our republican leader, has said he will not negotiate until he knows where President Trump stands," he said.

Schumer was referring to McConnell's comments earlier this week that Trump has not yet made clear what proposal he would support on a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The R messaging/propaganda is always better. Now we have how many Ds voting against a bill to extend CHIP for 6 years. Political campaign commercials and one liners don't do nuance.

Republicans control all three branches of government.

They could pass this without a single Democrat voting for it.

Fuck McConnell.

Do not allow GIP to frame and blame Democratic Party.

Democrats should say GOP is solely responsible.

You have the majority, remember Mitch? You pass your POS Legislation and we will make sure you remain Minority Leader, for the sake of this Country.

so their play is to say the Dems wont budge and give 9 or 10 votes. Funny, I seem to remember the country's credit rating getting downgraded b/c the f-ing GOP would hold the debt ceiling hostage every 3 months. we darn near defaulted just so they could get 80 billion in cuts from Obama and then look what they do the minute they get in. Pass huge tax cuts and blow up the deficit. But oh yea, its all the Dems fault.
