My thoughts on the new President Obama ad ...

First, let me say I thought it is a good ad. It spells out exactly what this election is about ... a choice in the path America will follow.

But I wonder if the ad does exactly what I have long criticized about liberal thought.

Liberals trust and believe facts. We also trust and believe that reasoned arguments will win the day. And we, trust and believe that others trust and believe facts and will follow reasoned arguments to their logical conclusions. And liberals spend our time and resources on developing strong, fact-based arguments.

So our approach to communicating/arguing points goes something like this:

"Fact A + Fact B + Fact C will lead people to Liberal Conclusion X."

For example:

Fact A: Economists indicate that Consumer Demand drives 70% of the economy.

Fact B: The middle and working classes constitute 90+% of the U.S. population.

Fact C: Economists, and recent history, indicate that providing tax cuts for those with annual incomes greater than $250,000 does very little to affect Consumer Demand.

These facts will lead people to the only real strategy to boost economic activity ... putting money into the hands of the working and middle classes.

The problem is ... conservatives don't care about facts (unless they support their conclusion) and the apolitical and many "independents" are not paying close enough attention to follow/critically consider arguments ... they are too busy trying to "make it."

So when liberals "allow" people to arrive at their own conclusions, we lose the argument; whereas, conservatives spend their time and resources developing simple jinglistic bumper-sticker arguments, that require no (and in fact would not stand up to) critical thought.

Repubs will only remember the President wants to tax the rich more. That's bad because we all know the rich are the ones who create the jobs!

from what I've seen, Obama really wants to win a second term, and it seems he particularly wants to beat Romney, more than he wanted to beat Hillary or McCain. I don't like the "we're not worthy" attitude sometimes shown toward Obama, but as far as strategizing we should bow down before him, imho.

As far as people not caring about facts, I think you are overstating it. Both sides appeal to people's concern about facts, for example you see ads from both sides showing newspaper headlines, and citing newspaper articles to support their cases. Romney used that awful FactCheck.org conclusion in one of his ads.

unemployment. He should point it out more forcefully, when it happens.
He is right that we cannot go back to policies that caused the recession, tax cuts for those over $250,000, deregulation, health care inequity etc. Seems to me everyone should remember how we got here and doing away with the safety net will only make matters worse. He could raise the maximum earnings to $350,000 for small business who hire; but keep it at $250,000 for individuals for a compromise.

Conservatives are a lost cause.

This ad is aimed at the 8-10% that aren't sure who to vote for yet.

Those people can be reached with facts and reason.

The 45% of the country that are conservative nimrods aren't reachable with any ad.
