Carolyn McCarthy speaks out on yet another massacre and has an action plan -- she wants our help.

Are We Going to Wait for Another Massacre? Rep. Carolyn McCarthy Urges Stricter Gun Control Measures

From her interview with Amy Goodman, Democracy Now:

Well, actually, your audience could certainly help. We're trying to get people to sign on to support H.R. 308. We want people to call the White House, we want people to call the speaker of the House, to say this is commonsense legislation that will stop these large magazines being on our streets, being in the stores, being on the internet. I think it's important that people have to start saying we need to get involved more. We can certainly outnumber so many of those NRA members that keep fighting us back. We have the numbers in this country, but we need to hear their voices.

So, basically, what it would do is ban - it would bring it back to the Assault Weapons Ban Act, where the large magazines could not be sold. We need the Americans' support. Your listeners can be part of that solution. We're asking everybody to share their voice. Let the president know there is support from the other side, us, us that have been trying to fight to reduce gun violence in this country. Are we going to wait for another massacre? Are we going to have this discussion six months, another year, 12, 13, 20, a hundred people die? We can't wait anymore. We need help. I can do what I need to do in Congress, but I do need the support of many other members of Congress, and I hope - I hope - your message and my message gets out to your listeners, that they are capable of doing something. But we need help.

Some places to start:

The bill hasn't gotten out of the Judiciary Committee since January, 2011. The rostrum of Judiciary Committee members is here: http://judiciary.house.gov/about/members.html Time to inundate them with shaming phone calls, particularly if your Republican representative is a member of the committee. All but 2 of the Democrats on the committee are co-sponsors of the bill. The two that aren't are Jared Polis (Colorado) and Mel Watt (NC).

Read the bill, check the co-sponsors (a long list of Democrats, not one Republican), etc. GovTrack gives it a 3% chance of being enacted -- let's prove them wrong: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/hr308

Support HR 308: Ban High Capacity Magazines. Stand with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (petition)

As Rep. McCarthy suggests, call Speaker Boehner (hundreds of shaming phone calls might actually have an impact):

And she's right, let President Obama know that we're out here and there is support for finally fucking dealing with these assault weapons & the ease with which people like James Holmes arm themselves with an arsenal of 6000 rounds.

Can you imagine the stockpiles in all of the various hate groups? The "patriot" militias?

Time to fight the ease with which all of these increasingly dangerous wackos stockpile their weapons of mass destruction and the ammunition for them.

Look, we can sit on the sidelines and post endlessly about this massacre and so many others. Or we can act and pressure our representatives to pass this commonsense law. I can already hear the naysayers....you'll never get Republicans to vote for this, it's a waste of time, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Well, I for one will damn well try -- the more of us who do, the more likely it is that we'll make a dent.

subsequent 2006 legislation sponsored by Republicans to re-affirm support for the invasion of Iraq.

She also would not vote in favor of repealing New York State's death penalty, because the majority of her constituents favored the death penalty even though she stated that she does NOT support the death penalty.

Not listening to her on any issue.

And sadly, there's a particular irony about her supporting the invasion of a state that had nothing to do with 9/11, later re-affirming her support for that invasion, declining to support a repeal of capital punishment, and then supporting curbs on the right of civilians to bear arms.

I expect an elected representative to listen to their constituents, even if that means going against their personal beliefs.

While I don't support her on this issue, nor on her votes on Iraq, I applaud a representative that truly represents her constituents rather than herself.

JMO, YMMV.
