This shutdown was a lesson for Donald.

No. Everyone does not jump at his commands.

The minority still hold some power in our system of government. Thanks to rules like the "Byrd rule", which Mitch McConnell and the Repubs have used many times, and requires 60 votes to end debate and request a vote. That is why Donald Trump wants the "nuclear option" - just like they did with Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. But even Mitch McConnell is too much of a traditionalist to make those changes. The Senate would then be no different from the House. I don't think he would agree with Trump on the "nuclear option"....at least, I hope not.

Donald had to go to his room. Granted, it was the White House. But he wanted to be in Mar-A-Lago with all his wealthy supporters. But then, they had to go and shut down the government. What would it have looked like if he flew to a big party while the government was shut down? Not very good.

He simply could not believe that a "minority" Party could have so much power. He needs that "nuclear option". It goes to show that the balance of powers can act in different ways sometimes.

2. Don't count on it...

If we cave and give him his CR with only a vague promise of DACA maybe being addressed in a couple of weeks, he'll see it as how he triumphed again over the Washington swamp and those Democrat losers in particular, and will just become more confident he can do it over and over.

3. If we agree to a 30 day CR with 6 years of funding for CHIP AND a promise of DACA being addressed

in a couple of weeks, we will still have the leverage of another CR in 30 days AND raising the debt limit.

edit to add: If we do nothing and Rs invoke Nuclear option, we could lose CHIP and all leverage.

TRump can't remember what he said from one minute to the next and he never honors his debts. Promises are no good. If we don't get "paid" up front, we will never see it, and will look like foolish chumps to boot.

P.s. If they use the nuclear option they will "win" this war...but boy will they ever pay.

6. You don't think it would be advantageous to get 6 years of CHIP in the bank, a promise for DACA

and then hold them accountable for their DACA promise in 30 days?

9. They will need Dem votes for a CR again in 30 days and will need dem votes

to raise the debt limit. We would already have CHIP at that point.

8. No, because a "promise" on DACA is meaningless...

So, we let the show go on, and, by early February, McYurtle allows a separate DACA bill to be brought to the Senate floor. And it loses. Or it passes the Senate and Ryan kills it in the House. Or it passes both chambers, and Trump vetos it. Do we shut the government down again? I very much doubt it. (Generally, a second shutdown starts costing the minority party, big-time.)

I think it should be clear that, if we don't get DACA in this CR, we won't get it at all.

10. I fear we are losing leverage and they will find a way to pass the CR without any concessions

and we will lose CHIP. That will hurt so many families. I would much rather get CHIP, a promise on DACA and roll the dice with the shut down in 30 days.

11. They can't "find a way" unless we cave. Period.

It sounds like you're fine with playing the Republicans' "divide and conquer" game. Well, if it works this time, expect to see it a lot more in the future.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of "Sophie's Choice."
