He's been so proactive and speaking out so much lately that there's talk he may be thinking of a national run.

...dormant for his first several years, seemingly going through the motions.

He's ten times better than Pataki, but still certainly not Mario. I doubt he'd go far as a Presidential candidate.

Are you familiar with the connection between Pataki and D'Amato?

A funny story - years ago I was up in Saratoga for the Travers. Traditionally the Governor of New York awards the trophy to the winning connections. I was down near the winners circle after the race when some guy ran over to his wife, who was standing next to me, yelling "I got the Governor's autograph!" I asked him, "can I see it?" I looked at it and dryly said to him - "That says Al D'Amato". He was pissed.

5. He's not been all that popular up in my neck-of-the-woods, but I think that is changing

With the advent of Trump. This is a traditionally Republican area, but I drive a lot locally and saw only two Trump stickers before the election. And our current congresswoman is a Paul Ryan acolyte Trump-supporting Republican and she is enormously unpopular. There have been numerous protests and she now only releases her schedule after-the-fact because protesters show up.

It seems like everytime I look at the local paper now, I see some positive action by Cuomo. He says he's focusing on running for a third term, but he seems to be finally becoming more proactive. I agree he'll never be his father, but this is still good news!

And I do remember D'Amato. I wasn't paying a lot of attention back then, but I know I never voted for him, LOL. Apparently he backed some Democrats in recent years, specifically Governor Cuomo and Kirsten Gillibrand, but then he supported Trump and thought Giuliani would make a good AG, so I'm glad I voted against him.

That is a very cool story! Especially that you spent time in Saratoga! And how could anyone mistake D'Amato for Pataki?? Isn't the former governor about 9 feet tall??

I grew up in Saratoga and would go to the track on occasion with my Dad, he knew enough people to "borrow" a box. But we never went to the Travers, though I begged to see Secretariat as a kid, but my Dad wasn't willing to battle the crowds. August in Saratoga was bad enough!

....he was relatively unknown, but D'Amato put him up to it and supported him. He essentially became a puppet of D'Amato until D'Amato was defeated by Schumer. That's why I sarcastically told that guy "it says Al D'Amato".

I went to Saratoga at least once every season from 1968 until a couple of years ago. It's gotten to be too much of a hassle, and it's nothing like it used to be years ago. There's barely any room to walk around now, food and souvenir stands have cropped up everywhere, and now they've built huge tents for "VIPs" who aren't even there for the races.

Growing up about five miles from both Aqueduct and Belmont, I got to see a number of Secretariat's races, including the Belmont Stakes, including his first win (I bet against him!)

... Gov. Charlie Baker (R-MA) is an OK guy.

One of the last moderate Republicans and probably a dying breed.
