Thirteen years into the job, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. remains a conservative but he has shifted to a more moderate position among the conservative justices on the court, a small change with potentially dramatic consequences, BuzzFeed News reports.
Among the justices appointed by Republican presidents, Roberts agreed least with Justice Anthony Kennedy in Roberts first two terms leading the court and the most with Kennedy in the two most recently completed terms.
That kind of shift could have significant effects on how the current court decides major issues and if it represents a permanent change on how Roberts leads the court into the next decade.

(56,828 posts)but, i do think he will at least listen to other arguments rather than reflexively voting the (R) party line. He also spoke out against Merrick Garland not even being given a vote, though that was about as effective as spitting into the wind.

(10,952 posts)several years ago. The book looks at the Supreme Court over the first seven years of the Burger court and is an interesting read on how the SC operates behind the scenes. Historically, the SC preferred to create smaller, incremental changes which produced more stability in the court system. With the shift in the court to a more rabid Conservative basis this could be why Roberts might shift more to the moderate side. In the back of his mind, as the Chief Justice, he probably is always aware of how will history view the SC and how does it maintain its credibility.

(54,405 posts)He has made exactly one significant mitigating ruling (ACA's constitutionality) that has shown any willingness to want to help the population. He is not Hugo Black. He is not (yet, anyway) a defender of the people of the country he professes to serve.

(30,481 posts)Some parts, which he ruled against, were struck down. Take the mandatory Medicaid Expansion as an example.
He seems to get a lot of kudos for calling a tax a tax.

(54,405 posts)He hasn't really done much of a memorable job as yet, and Citizens United did a LOT of permanent damage to us.

(26,623 posts)No trust at all in John Roberts from me.. He fucked up Obama's swearing in, I think because Obama voted against his nomination. Now, that may sound ridiculous and probably is, but he had one job and fucked it up in front of the world.

(43,180 posts)Love him or hate him, I always thought Roberts a very bright man. He has a hint of old time conservatism,
a status quo silence on some issues. In press interviews he has stated how he dislikes the politicizing of the
courts, the aftermath of Bush v. Gore. So that he would seek balance in some cases, and recognize that
not everyone agrees with conservatism should be no surprise. I think him a principled conservative, but
not an ideologue. There is a difference.

That was the most destructive, corrupting ruling since Dred Scott, in terms of undermining Democracy.
That rabid stare of his ain't for nothing!

(6,139 posts)I am curious how will he rule in religious freedom cases, like that bakery case from coloroda or any abortion related rulings. During his confirmation, he said that row v wade was a settled law. I think that as a chief justice he feels more responsible that other conservative justices and at least takes precedents into consideration.
