First, because real people's paychecks are being affected, and second, because I have a bad feeling that Democrats will unjustly get blamed for this.
Fox will constantly pound away about it being a "Schumer shutdown" or whatever bullshit talking point they're circulating. That's a given, but I'm apprehensive that CNN and other actual news sources will go all "both sides" and lay partial blame on Democrats.
I'd like to see Trump concede and declare it a victory. Or for Congressional Republicans to panic a little and actually work something out.

(10,624 posts)permanent legal status for the DACA recipients and long-term funding for the CHIP program.
It's time that we stopped allowing Republicans to toy with the lives of these children and young people.
And I know that a stand has to be taken. I just hope we can annihilate the damn Repukes in the midterms so it doesn't come to this kind of crap again. Hell, if we take both houses, I want us to completely ditch any procedure that requires more than a 1 vote victory and then run roughshod over those assholes.

( yes, I know it isnt checks anymore, but it'll be the day before grandma is supposed to get paid. Trump is dumb enough to fuck around with that payment, but McConnell isn't, I think).

(20,875 posts)Not enough pay to qualify for a car loan much less a HOME loan, so no home nor new car despite the fact I had a permanent full-time job w/benefits.
I was making abt. $6.00/hr. at that time and my rent took up most of my income for the month and that was in 1979 during the Carter years prior to Reagun.
All was not well in the pre-Reagun years only to worsen upon Reagun as president.
We'll be there again soon with inflation on the rise. Who will be able to flip houses and refinance ad infinitum when the rates go up to 8-10%+? Who? Only the rich, the usual suspects!

(9,287 posts)ICE detains a Polish doctor and green-card holder who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 40 years
Lukasz Niec was 5 years old when his parents brought him and his sister to the United States from Poland. With two suitcases in tow, his parents both doctors left behind a country on the verge of social turmoil. It was 1979, about two years before the countrys authoritarian communist government declared martial law.
Niec received a temporary green card and, in 1989, became a lawful permanent resident. He grew up in Michigan, went to medical school, became a doctor, and raised a daughter and stepdaughter.
But on Tuesday morning, immigration authorities arrested Niec at his home, just after he had sent his 12-year-old stepdaughter off to school. Niec, a physician specializing in internal medicine at Bronson Healthcare Group in Kalamazoo, Mich., has been detained in a county jail ever since, awaiting a bond hearing and possible deportation.

(10,952 posts)and vote for a budget that does not give them a substantial payback like permanent status for DACA. Once the budget issue is resolved, the Democrats will be moved back to irrelevant status in what they can accomplish in Congress. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer need to pull the Democrats behind closed door and hammer out one cohesive messaging plan for how they publicly respond to the shut down.

(6,399 posts)And we've heard it repeatedly over the weekend, last week, last month as well.
It's hard to get the message out when the news programs and pundit programs largely bring in Republicans tho.
And when you have such willful denial that there is any messaging being done. How often do we hear people complain that Democrats in office arent' saying anything about any of the insane things going on but if you go and actually look at their social media side where it shows their statements as well as local interviews and the like where they take their stands. It's come down to "if it doesn't get full national coverage of being said, then nobody is saying anything and we're failing."

(5 posts)All day long yesterday I had CNN on while working on my taxes for 2017.
Let me tell you, they were sounding more and more like Faux News with
each passing hour. All of these stations are corporate-owned but I
expected more of CNN.
The only hope is that Dump continues to do and say more horrific things
between now and the mid-terms.

(16,245 posts)If this shutdown ends soon (and there are no others--I wouldn't be sure of that myself) I don't think most people will care by then. They will move on to something else. And Trump will almost certainly do something else reprehensible (probably many things) before then.
Democrats really need to keep up the pressure. AND keep showing videos of obstructionist Republicans.

(4,447 posts)I'm really feeling overwrought about the 2018 elections. I want us to take both houses of Congress so badly. I'm so worried that just about anything will turn on us and leave the Republicans in charge of one or both houses. I know that Trump's numbers are in the dumpster and Congressional Republicans are attached at the hip to him (not really the hip, more like their lips to his ass) and that should result in a massive turnaround in Congress and gain us at least one of the houses. But I saw the country ignore a qualified woman who had the most lopsided victories I've ever seen in debates and saw the media run with so many false equivalencies and then every moron in America turned out to initiate the Idiocracy. I'm worried that the same morons will grasp at any excuse to come out again and ruin the country for at least another 2 years. After seeing Trump get elected, I'm paranoid about disaster. I think the shutdown is the right thing to do. But in this country, that doesn't mean you get rewarded for it. Quite the opposite most of the time, it seems.

(129,092 posts)In a decision that could tilt the congressional balance of power in a key swing state in favor of Democrats, Pennsylvania's highest court decided Monday that the state's GOP-drawn congressional districts violate its Constitution, and ordered all 18 districts redrawn in the next few weeks.
Less partisan congressional districts could give Democrats a chance this November to win back as many as half a dozen seats that had been lost to them over the past decade. It could also give the party a major boost in its quest to take back the House of Representatives, where Democrats need to net 24 seats to win control of the chamber.
Yet another gerrymandered district map thrown out!! tweeted Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) of the news. Todays decision is a victory for democracy and another blow to the Republican Partys nationwide effort to game the system," said Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, in a statement.
In a 4-to-3 decision, Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ordered the Republican-controlled state legislature to redraw the lines by Feb. 9, an extraordinarily quick timeline that will reset the districts in time for the state's May congressional primaries. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf will have veto power over the maps.

Yet another gerrymandered district map thrown out!! Pennsylvania overall cast more D votes than R votes for House in 2012, yet sent 13-5 R/D delegation to Congress thanks to "bulk gerrymandering." https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/01/22/pennsylvanias-supreme-court-just-gave-democrats-a-big-win-on-redistricting/?utm_term=.62fe0c028a5a&wpisrc=al_news__alert-politics--alert-national&wpmk=1
