I used to know a guy...
Emigrated to this country on a "chain migration" plan.
Lived here 60 years, until he died.
Never learned English, he stayed in "enclaves" of those who spoke his native language.
No criminal record, maybe a traffic stop at most.
He was my Great-Grandfather, a "Volga German," a minister who preached to German farmers who were invited to Russia during the rule of the Czars.
Emigrated when the Czars really got nasty.
Only spoke German.

(129,081 posts)There are thousands of illegal Irish sitting in Boston right now and they wouldn't even garner a 2nd glance from the goon squads unless they have been known to have committed a crime (which is something new compared to the wink wink of the past).

(146,317 posts)His parents, who came here, ended up in Lincoln, Nebraska, with many others. They never learned English well. Their son, my father-in-law was the first of that immigrant group to graduate from NU, and served in the US Army during WWII and Korea.

(146,317 posts)from my wife's family. She has a cousin from her father's side who still lives in Lincoln.
It's a little unusual to encounter others of that heritage. It's not my heritage, but I talked to her father a lot about it, and translated some old Russian documents for him. When he died, we contacted that cultural center with a list of things we had. They requested some on that list, so we sent them to the center, after making copies for the family.
