Democrats Fold, Will Vote to Reopen Gov’t With a Promise From Mitch McConnell
Joshua Roberts/Reuters

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced Monday on the Senate floor that his party will provide enough votes to pass the Republican plan to reopen the federal government until at least February 8. The bipartisan deal was contingent upon a promise from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he will open debate on an immigration bill protecting so-called “Dreamers” from deportation.

Any time I hear "McConnell" and "promise," I call foul, especially when he only "promised" to open debate. He might open it for 45 seconds at 2:00 in the morning and only allow a Republican to speak, for instance.

the utter incompetent ability of the repugs to govern despite running all there branches of government.

Repug asses will be in the spotlight for these 3 weeks and if they renege on their promise another shutdown begins — and they know the Dems hold that 60-vote power over them. They can't get away with 50 votes and Pence breaking the tie to give them a win.

I think of a story that is alleged to have happened at a major comic book company many decades ago.

There was an artist who was doing excellent work, but it was on a title he really did not like doing. He went to the publisher and asked to transfer to one of the many titles featuring a more-popular character. The publisher told him there were no openings for that character's line, but assured him that if an opening came up this artist could have it.

A few weeks later, one of the artists working on that character announced his decision to leave the company, and the publisher added that the new artist would be <someone-other-than-aforementioned-artist>.

<Aforementioned-artist> read the news, came to the publishing office, and confronted the publisher with "But, <publisher-name>, you promised that book to me!"

To which, the publisher is alleged to have said, in front of witnesses, "Look, <aforementioned-artist>, if you're going to start holding me to my promises, I'm going to have to stop making them!"

I don't see it that way at all. The Democrats are the minority and there's a limit to their bargaining power. To avoid being blamed for a long-term shutdown which would hurt the economy and deprive millions of federal employees of their paychecks, they agreed to a solution which is not by any means entirely satisfactory but has the advantage of letting the Democrats take credit for reopening the government while leaving DACA on the table.

The republicans hold all the cards and control 100% of the government so let's beat up on the democrats and give the lousy MF'ers that are controlling all this a pass.

In some ways, once things shut down, you've got a lot of sunk costs that will be incurred again come Feb. 8. McConnell lied to a Senator in his own caucus to get her vote on the tax cuts, which led to the current state of affairs. Has McConnell suddenly become more trustworthy, or are Democrats just giving McConnell another chance to lie to a fresh set of people?

I'm not happy at all about the shutdown, and slightly happier that it may end. There are lives at stake. But if McConnell proves again that his promise isn't worth the breath, the Senate should just shut down the government until November. Because what we have now in power isn't governance, it's terrorism.

Granted, I would have liked the Ds to hold firm, but if they were going to strike a compromise of some sort in order to get the fed govt working again, today was the day to do it. Waiting longer would likely have eroded some of the public support we now enjoy. Doing it today solidifies that support and now puts the onus entirely on the Rs going forward.

Daily Beast got it wrong. Both sides compromised here. Surprisingly, I think it was a good stroke for us. One, we can't be held accountable for the Rs not following through on their promise. And two, since it's very likely that the McTurtle and Trump will not see eye to eye on any DACA proposal given Trump's loyalty to Miller and his alt-right base, the diivide between the two and within the GOP will only widen; that's a good thing.

If Feb 8 comes along with no deal then we shut down again. The important thing this time is we don’t re-authorize spending after that, until TRUMP’s signature is on the DACA bill, keeping in mind that Trump would love nothing better to get a longer term spending bill and then not keep his DACA promise. He is a LIAR, and to me its clear from his behavior that is his goal is to throw these people out of their home, knowing his base would absolutely love it.

and I'm usually among the first to yell about spineless Democrats.

I think Schumer played this well. McConnell made an offer that sounds like reasonable (and might be if he keeps his word) - the Democrats accepted. Refusing it would have been overplaying our hand. Now if McConnell does not keep his word, it's not the Democrats who will look like they're not willing to play nice.
