Progressives are hammering Sen. Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) for his agreement with Senate Republican leadership to end the government shutdown on Monday.
Even House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has spoken out against the deal, saying there was no reason to support it.
I dont see that theres any reason Im speaking personally and hearing from my members to support what was put forth, Pelosi said at a press briefing shortly before Schumer signaled Senate Democrats would agree to it.

(28,394 posts)I don't trust Mitch and think he will not follow through on DACA. He is one shifty old SOB.

(17,006 posts)We got CHIP funded and we have McTurtle on record promising to bring a DACA bill to the floor. If Feb 8th comes and goes and McTurtle was lying, we can do it again. Meanwhile, 1,000's of families with medically fragile children can get a good nights sleep. We did that! Now we need to frame the message and get it out there. Allowing dreamers a path to citizenship has huge popular support. The repubs don't have anything to hold over our heads, like they were doing with CHIP funding, to keep us from fighting hard for dreamers.

(16,646 posts)It's a line from a Dustin Hoffman movie (Outbreak). I think Schumer likes having DACA as a weapon against the GOP, especially in the fall elections. He's willing to fight over and over and let Trump and the GOP be the obstacle. The agreement he has now prevents us from insisting that DACA be PASSED AND SIGNED in order to get the CR. McConnell and the senate can debate, and even pass something, and Trump and the House can ignore it. But Mitch kept his promise.

(68,586 posts)thus the GOP isn't going to do it. you are being unfair to Schumer.

(16,646 posts)It's not that I don't think he'd mind getting it passed, but he also has little motivation to drag out the shutdown too long. Truth is, besides February, in March as the deadline is approaching, the GOP won't be able to ignore it again. It will be the talk of the town. I'm not sure quite honestly that Schumer's approach is all that flawed. He may never have gotten a DACA bill that he wanted to pass, and at some point the GOP could have easily painted him as intransigent because they'd pass some DACA thing and he'd still not accept it.

(63,215 posts)They had no bargaining power and still managed to protect an essential and life-saving program.
I would have preferred that DACA be protected as well, but if they'd fought for DACA first they'd have run face-first into the brick wall of GOP racism, and they'd have lost both programs.
If CHIP is secured, then now is the time to begin the DACA fight afresh.

Aren't we supposed to be done arguing the last election?
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)And, no. We can still discuss the last election. It's the primary we're not supposed to discuss.
