TPM "It's Morally Reprehensible: Liberals Livid With Senate Dems Over Shutdown Deal"

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/its-morally-reprehensible-liberals-livid-with-senate-dems-over-shutdown-deal

Progressives and immigrant advocates are furious at Senate Democrats for agreeing to end a short-lived shutdown without any guarantee that they’ll win protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as youngsters, seeing it as a full-scale capitulation by the party.

The majority of Senate Democrats voted Monday for a bill to fund the government through Feb. 8, less than three days after standing together to force a short-lived government shutdown. In doing so, they managed only to secure a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that he’d allow them to bring the DREAM Act to the floor for a vote if no deal is reached before then.

The deal infuriated the left-wing groups and immigration advocates who had cheered their Friday stand — with many warning of recriminations, the first major schism on the left since President Trump’s election.

“It’s morally reprehensible and political malpractice. It’s [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer’s job to keep his caucus together and stand up for progressive values and he failed on both fronts,” Ezra Levin, a leader of the Indivisible Project, told TPM shortly after the vote. “We’re going to be holding the Democrats accountable who caved.”

Others were just as mad.

This is what happens when Democrats pout because their chosen candidate isn't the nominee and stay home from the polls. If you want a filibuster-proof majority, everyone has to support the same person and everyone has to vote. I think I'm about as far left as you can get and I don't see how Schumer could have done much better than a promise for a vote on DACA.

Reprehensible. Unforgivable.

And then Democrats wonder why some voters would rather stay home than vote for the easy-queasy Democrats now in Congress.

For shame!

If you don't vote for the Dem you may not like, a Republican gets elected and then you complain because the issue doesn't go your way, but then the Dem runs again and you're still mad and you stay home and don't vote and the Republican is elected and the issue doesn't go your way again . . . and on and on and on. Without the numbers we're impotent. Keeping the government in shutdown would have gotten us nowhere because we don't have the numbers.

...they could get. I predict Mitch McCon and The Donald will end up favoring no deal. Their survival is based on getting rid of people who would overwhelmingly become Democrats.

Hard to tell what's really going on.

In an early indication of the Democratic divide, votes opposing the agreement on Monday came from some of the caucus’s most liberal members as well as those likely to consider presidential bids in 2020, including Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Cory Booker of New Jersey, and Kamala Harris of California. “I refuse to put the lives of nearly 700,000 young people in the hands of someone who has repeatedly gone back on his word,” Harris said in a statement, referring to McConnell. “I will do everything in my power to continue to protect Dreamers from deportation.”

Without a veto-proof majority, Dems can't pass a bill, DACA or otherwise. Given current circumstances, Dems have won a concession, albeit a small one, from Republicans. This is about as good as it gets until Dems have a majority. Throwing tantrums over not getting their way is short-sighted and counter-productive. It would be helpful if more people truly understood what negotiations entail and how our government actually works.

Being on the receiving end of a govt shutdown, I don't like when republicans or democrats use federal employees as their hostage to get their agenda items. It's bullshit. The govt funding should be a stand alone issue and not used as extortion by any party to get something. They should just do their jobs of writing and passing legislation without having to threaten people's livelihoods every few months

And retroactive pay is never a guarantee and with the republicans in control? I was seriously worried that if the govt stayed shut down, they might just say, "no work, no pay" even if it was out of the employee's control.

as others have said, this is the best we can get unless we can get more influence in Congress.

Trump started this by calling an end to DACA, knowing that would set everyone off. Then he refused to do anything to stop the ruckus.

Including some that appear to be thinking about 2020 like Booker and Harris.

Perhaps is about moral courage and the 2000 Dreamers who will lose status between now and Feb 8.
