They are going to the brink again in a couple of weeks. There won't be anything done in regards to DACA. Even if, and that's a Giant IF, McConnell allows a bill through, it's DOA in the House, or the President's desk. I don't see any way it will be a 2/3rds margin.
Drumpf wanted to clean the plate so he can give his SOTU next week, Mission Accomplished! Once that's over, he really doesn't care, and the next time, the repubs will double down on their blaming any shutdown on the Democrats.
Is there any question that Mitch is "Lucy," and Chuck S. is "Charlie?"

(25,487 posts)The GOP can no longer use CHIP as a bargaining piece.
January 19th, the GOP held two hostages.
February 8th, they will be holding only one.

(3,194 posts)The repub position was not in question on CHIP. They would have been roundly criticized if that did not go through.
The same can't be said over DACA. That is the one they really have no intention of giving in on.

(12,660 posts)Who knows what will come out of that. And ultimately, it's up to Drumpf and whomever has his ear at the moment.
McConnell might actually try to pull a strategic end run to take the power of the DACA issue away from the Democrats, and "come through with a decent bi-partisan bill", trusting Drumpf to veto it - and who knows what would be going on in Drumpf's brain once it's put in front of him?
2017 should have shown you - it's not "Politics as Usual", it's Politics as a Tilt-a-Whirl.
I'm not sure what will happen in the next 17 days, and I'm a student of history.

(9,527 posts)And you're actually just wrong. If we had done nothing for 17 days, that's 17 more days without CHIP funding. It's 17 more days of federal employees, contractors and all businesses who rely on those jobs not being paid.
Donald Trump is going to do what he wants for the State of the Union. Why live in fear of that? Do you think he's not going to lie and act like a blithering idiot?

(3,194 posts)He will act like things are going fine, and he'll also threaten the Dems if they look like they're going to shutdown things again on the 8th.
