Democrats freed nine million child hostages. Republicans got a Willie Horton ad.

Well, the #TrumpShutdown ended Monday with no DACA deal, and the Democratic base is understandably furious. But this is the beginning of the fight for immigration fairness and the DREAMers, not the end. And Democrats actually got some things out of round one.
The deal struck by Senate moderates a new gang of 30 if you will reopens the government, preventing misery and financial strain for thousands of federal workers. It also secures a promise, for what thats worth, from Mitch McConnell to allow open, bipartisan negotiations on an immigration deal to be voted on by February 8th, when the current funding bill expires.
That may not sound like much, and any Democrat who wants to run for president in 2020 was smart to vote against it, but the deal is actually more than it appears to be. Here are three reasons why:
It free 9 million kids the GOP was holding hostage
Mondays deal took the Childrens Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, off the table. On Thursday, South Dakota Republican Senator Mike Rounds made an interesting admission to NBCs Chuck Todd about the program that Republicans had cynically allowed to run out of money nearly three months ago. Under the current proposal, Rounds said, CHIP is now off the table because its been extended for a period of six years. And so then what is the next bargaining chip that brings Democratsto the table? Thats exactly where the GOP finds itself now. As one blogger at the Daily Kos cleverly put it: Dems free 8.9M child hostages from kidnappers; 690K adults still being held as negotiations continue.
Without CHIP in the mix, as Eric Boehlert pointed out on Twitter, the next round of negotiations will be clean from a messaging point of view in that it will be all about the DREAMers. No longer can McConnell, Paul Ryan, the Trump administration and other Republicans claim that Democrats are harming our children for the sake of illegal immigrants the outrageous and subrosa racist frame adopted by the GOP during this past weeks debacle.
It puts McConnell on the spot

Just like our last election, ONE candidate knew what could be done and what could NOT be done.

(1,058 posts)Democrats have cornered Republicans into a three week race to get a "deal" done on immigration. There are two dangerous ways this could play out:
1. Senate republican leadership lumps together legal status but no path to citizenship for DACA, $20 B in funding for the wall, and comprehensive immigration reform that shuts down family based visas as well as the lottery program. Democrats are given a choice between accepting a hardline stance on immigration to protect dreamers, or shutting down the government by rejecting the "immigration reform" bill that they demanded in exchange for ending the shutdown.
2. Senate republican leadership dutifully writes a beautiful DACA bill that puts dreamers on a full path to citizenship, and contains no poison pills. Senate passes the bill. McConnell has fulfilled his promise completely, and Democrats further extend funding to avert a shutdown in February. In the meantime, the House passes their own DACA bill that has no path to citizenship, $20B in wall funding, and scraps family/lottery immigration. Negotiations break down, but McConnell proved that he could be trusted - just those plebian house members who wouldn't play along.
I mean, things _could_ go as planned, and we'll merely trade wall funding for DACA, but that feels like "best case", not "worst case". I'll be delighted to be wrong about this.

(1,058 posts)But if what you are going to agree to is exactly what was on the table to avert the last shutdown, I don't see how you can argue (to the editorial's premise) that this "bold fold" somehow puts "pressure on Trump and his GOP enablers".

I'm not sure who's "furious"?.. I see mostly reasoned reality posts on why this is a good step forward.

(37,648 posts)I think it's more of a chance for some politicians to get tv time. Do you really think any of the Republicans are going to change their minds from when they supported repealing Obama's deal?
I think McConnell agreed because he knows it won't make a difference, in the end. But we'll see.

(37,648 posts)The plan is never to give them amnesty. Deporting is secondary. That's my understanding. Because the base doesn't want "them illegals" getting govt benefits and getting to VOTE.

(8,702 posts)That was just as true of the CR on Friday. That CR also had the 6-year CHIP deal...there was nothing special about this deal except it was one week less...thats it. All those other things would have still been true but without the shutdown...no one should be so foolish to think Democrats have the political stomach to shut down the government twice in 4 weeks.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)the shutdown CHIP kids would have been without medical care...can you imagine the optics? And these are real kids that we need to consider no matter what. We did what we had to.
angrychair
(8,702 posts)Seriously I hope this works out great, I really do. That CR on Friday had all the same things and we could have avoided the negative impressions from shutdown on Friday to deal on Monday. I truly believe republicans have every intention to screw us and more importantly screw DACA kids and other immigrants.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)was pushing for a couple of days extension while a DACA bill fix was written. But at some point it become apparent, it wasn't going to happen. And we had commercials here in Ohio...the Democrats care about illegal aliens more that America's kids (CHIP) and it was having an effect. We weren't getting anywhere. My fear is the GOP has no intention of doing anything but begin deportation...and that makes me sick. But we got what we could. CHIP is a big deal. And I am hoping that the GOP doesn't want to see horrible pictures of deporting a million people on the news. It is our only shot. We just don't have the power to do more...hopefully we change that in 18.
Lets hope for the best...and get these asshat GOP's out as soon as possible. I have a cousin I love very much who has lost her job...she has a number of medical issues including MS and Leukemia which is in remission...she will die without medical care and the GOP didn't expand medicaid in Virginia. I hate the GOP so much...there are no words. We can pay for the medicine but the doctors visits and hospital cost thousands.

(22,822 posts)It was a brilliant tactical move. CHIP is safe, and DACA is next.
angrychair
(8,702 posts)If we had voted for the CR on Friday CHIP would have still been funded for 6 years and CHIP would have still have been off the table when it expired in 4 weeks instead of 3.
What did we actually gain? A promise that doesnt hold water? I mean McConnell has lied repeatedly and often on immigration reform for years. There is zero reason to believe anything he says on immigration reform.

(24,504 posts)Republicans still need to defend their position on DACA in 2018....but now CHIP is baked in to legislation (Thanks Democrats!). Repub's got nothing on CHIP and they now get to defend their indefensible position on DACA. Good luck with that!
angrychair
(8,702 posts)Having any sense of shame. Again, they having literally lied for YEARS on immigration reform with little to no repercussions.
Many here have missed my point, Im not questioning Democrats, Im questioning Democrats believing that republicans will tell the truth or hold up their end of the deal.
They have spent the last three days bashing DACA kids as illegal immigrants and insinuating they are criminals or drug dealers or living off welfare.
Why, after bashing DACA kids in such a manner do we think we are going to get honest debate on DACA or immigration reform? Its absurd.
I deeply hope Im wrong and we save them. I really do. I am also a realist and know that republicans are racist and xenophobic hate mongers and that hate is baked into their republican brand. They are going to do what the republican base wants and they do not want a DACA deal. They could care less about harming their election chances, all republicans care about is screwing over people of color.

(7,432 posts)down. Did you notice that you assumed their framing of the issue to be valid?

(8,702 posts)Its what TV commercials in key states all across the country were saying non-stop all weekend: that Dems were putting illegal immigrants over sick American kids...there was little effort to point out that republicans could have passed this very same CHIP bill (6 year CHIP, exactly the same that passed today) on a simple majority vote several months ago but refused to allow it to come up for a vote as a stand-alone bill in the House or Senate because they wanted to ratfuck Democrats.
That could have been avoided by voting for the 4-week CR/CHIP bill last Friday and then using DACA and the threat of shutdown 4 weeks from now. Another shutdown is not realistic...2 shutdowns in 4 weeks is politically unpalatable.
I fear the most likely outcome is a republican take it or leave it deal that includes a pathway to citizenship for DACA kids but otherwise includes stomach churning riders that will essentially dare Democrats to vote against it. I hope Im wrong but republicans are nasty, racist, xenophobic liars and they have never failed to disappoint Democrats by saying and doing whatever they can to screw over people of color.
