So Apple's answer to Amazon's echo, the homemade, will set you back 350 dollars

"Apple's first smart speaker -- the HomePod -- will be available for preorder in the US and UK starting Jan. 26 (Jan. 27 in Australia), the company announced on Tuesday. It goes on sale on Feb. 9, with the price set at $349, £319 or AU$499.

The confirmed release date is two months later than the December 2017 window originally announced when the product was first unveiled back in June at Apple's 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Jose.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, debuted the HomePod on stage during the keynote address at that show, but his presentation was short on details. That said, here's what we know so far about what Apple's Siri-powered rival to the Amazon Echo and the Google Home can do:

Send messages, set timers, listen to podcasts
Siri integration (via a "six-microphone array&quot
HomeKit-compatible
Can work with Apple Music subscription
Powered by an A8 processor (same as iPhone 6)
Spatial awareness
White and space gray color finishes
Measures 6.8 inches tall by 5.6 inches wide (172 by 142 mm)
Weighs 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg)
Bluetooth- and Wi-Fi-compatible
Works with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (view complete list of compatible devices here)
Integrates with Apple's Home app for iOS
Built-in touch display allows for manual music control (adjust the volume, play/pause, skip, skip back)
Multiroom audio and stereo pairing via AirPlay 2 coming later in 2018"

I will be very surprised if this will sell to anyone other than the most loyal Apple supporter

Amazon and Google are far less expensive, and feature wise the home pod look pretty mediocre, for a very premium price for what you get.

And you can join the lawsuits of shocked parents who found out their kid's toys, like dolls, etc. were photographing them,
recording them.

already Alexa and etc. have been hacked. Huge privacy issue. I don't get it either. but the trend will continue, sadly.

But the iPhone X and this new device will not be anything I will purchase. The price point makes no sense to me and it doesn't have any features that sets them dramatically apart from the things I already own.

My wife and I each have old iPods, old iPads, and iPhone 8's. Then we both use the Apple TV, the MacBook and the 6 year old Mac. We won't purchase replacements for any of them until what we have stops working. I don't mind buying Apple products because they last so long. In 1985 I bought an Apple Iic and used it daily until 1998. When I buy other brands I have had to replace them every two years and ultimately spent more money.

I don't have much use for my Amazon Dot (it was a gift), but I can justify $49.00. $350 to link it with my iTunes? No thanks. I'll just link my library to my blue tooth speakers through my iPhone. The new device doesn't do anything I can't already get done with other things I already own.

A generic one on Amazon that comes with a micro USB charger. She called me up wondering why it wasn't charging. She used her iPhone cable to charge a battery pack and was wondering why you couldn't charge it with that. I explained that Apple cables are proprietary and if Apple made a battery pack, the $10 one would be $40.

I've had Apple products (I use two iPod devices-- classic and shuffle-- one lives in the car the other in my gym bag) and grew up with Apple computers until the late 90s. I remember the Apple II, etc.

I am the same way with electronics as I am with cars-- I use them to the ground. My computer (Asus) is new because it replaced a (still working but slow) 7 year old laptop. Only reason I didn't use it longer is because campaign life is rough on laptops. My phone's 4 years old and just starting to have battery problems. That will be my electronic upgrade this year (going from S4 to S9).

I have a Bluetooth speaker but really just play music from my phone (while at home).

A micro usb cable is a micro usb cable. It doesn’t care what it is plugged into. If the connections fit, it will charge. I’ve got some rescue chargers — not even sure of the brand because they’re promotional items with company logo — and I can use my Apple chargers and cables to plug them in. Any device, as long as the connections match, will work.

If I was so inclined, I could also throw in an Amazon Echo for myself.

The last Apple product that interesting to me was the IIGS but it was way beyond my budget at the time. (I later bought one for $10 at a junk store.)

Apple discontinued it because it competed with their darling Macintosh. Unlike the Mac the IIGS had good color, good sound, extra slots for accessories, and compatibility with the Apple II.
