An Alabama high school teacher was placed on paid leave for using a racial slur to complain about music students were playing in class last week.
Students are allowed to listen to music in teacher Teddie Butchers food and nutrition class, but they said she complained about a song theyd chosen Friday while working on a project, reported AL.com.
The students were listening to Dear Mama, by Tupac, when the white teacher returned to class.
According to multiple witnesses, Butcher told students to turn the n*gger tunes off.
Students and their parents complained to Hoover High School administrators, and Butcher admitted to using the slur.

(6,399 posts)And while we disagree with her on what she did, there are plenty of other teachers accused of things that didn't happen and are given the same protections.
There's a process and it must be worked through. NOT mob mentality justice.

(263 posts)I don't see it as "mob justice". She admitted to saying it. Its not a criminal offense, it is offensive enough to lose your job over imho.

(6,399 posts)and whatever rules that the school has in agreement with union that has to be gone through. To not go through the proper procedure opens up the school/district to lawsuits.
Just doing shit on the fly is Trump's way.

(263 posts)She has protection through her union. That's great. Still think she should be fired but it's just my opinion. And trust me, I know my opinion really doesn't matter. Just my votes.

(6,843 posts)And over and over.
I heard a song my son was playing where the rapper said it about six times in the first minute.
I made my son turn it off, told him it was unacceptable, and told him not to play that garbage in my house. It was NOT okay.
He told me it was okay because it ended with an "a" and not an "r".
Yeah....NO! Turn it off.

(6,843 posts)"someone dumb enough to use that word" a bit ironic considering Hip hop culture uses the word superfluously.
I hate it. I don't buy the whole "we're taking the word back".
It's crude, it's demeaning, and it's wrong. Much like the word "retard". These are mean nasty words.

(2,358 posts)Are you saying that it's ok a for teacher to use the N-word because rappers use it all the time?
Edit: On re-reading, I think you are saying it was ok for her to ask for it to be turned off. I agree with that. It was the way she did it that makes me think she is a bit dumb.

Plenty in the song you could calmly say is not appropriate for a school setting but it was the teacher that went there to black students

(2,857 posts)Hoover High used to have one of the first reality shows. They think they're special. Add that to the fact that the have most likely the biggest tax base in the state from their homes and golf courses to their shopping and they do as they want. Their school is in the news every so often for trying to exclude 'apartment dwellers' children in various ways from rezoning to exclude apartments from their city limits to charging a fee to ride the public school busses and they were talking about eliminating busses all together at one point. Read the link below for a perspective from one of these moms I think is going to shock you..
The whole state has discussed this at points trying to straighten them out, but it's like talking to a wall. Even shaming them with talk of children being hit by cars trying to go to school in those busy and crowded streets did nothing. This teacher will be back as soon as people quit talking about it. Their elitist attitude considered, she will probably be rewarded.

I guess badass behavior has a certain allure for young folks and those who dont have a strong self image. Sadly, this gives more ammunition to the racists .

(100,080 posts)Of people spewing hate and bigotry because Trump emboldened the racists, sexists, and haters. Trump is definitely a symptom, the problem is a lot more complex and when / if we get back in power we definitely need to start addressing it.

(30,481 posts)When I was young, me and my mama had beef
Seventeen years old, kicked out on the streets
Though back at the time I never thought I'd see her face
Ain't a woman alive that could take my mama's place
Suspended from school, and scared to go home, I was a fool
With the big boys breakin' all the rules
I shed tears with my baby sister, over the years
We was poorer than the other little kids
And even though we had different daddies, the same drama
When things went wrong we'd blame Mama
I reminisce on the stress I caused, it was hell
Huggin' on my mama from a jail cell
And who'd think in elementary, hey
I'd see the penitentiary one day?
And runnin' from the police, that's right
Mama catch me, put a whoopin' to my backside
And even as a crack fiend, Mama
You always was a black queen, Mama
I finally understand
For a woman it ain't easy tryin' to raise a man
You always was committed
A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how you did it
There's no way I can pay you back, but the plan
Is to show you that I understand: you are appreciated

(6,399 posts)She has protections through a teacher's union and likely just school/state rules regarding firing of teachers as well.
Protections that most of us would want for ourselves as well.
Let the process play out. Stop demanding heads the minute something goes awry.
