NBC/Survey Monkey poll shows 56% blame Trump & GOP lawmakers for shutdown, 39% blame Dems

Those are the findings from the poll.

Though you have to read a few paragraphs into the stories to find those results because of the incompetently written headlines, which in the first two cases I've seen refer to Democrats and Trump being blamed and seem to treat the GOP lawmakers as having nothing to do with Trump.

NBC's headline:

Poll: Democrats, Trump to blame for government shutdown

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/poll-democrats-trump-blame-government-shutdown-n840246

Americans blame President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats about equally for the three-day government shutdown that ended Monday with another stopgap spending measure, according to a new NBC News|SurveyMonkey poll.

About 4 in 10 people, or 39 percent, think Democrats in Congress are responsible for the shutdown, which began early Saturday morning after Senate Democrats, citing insufficient progress on negotiations over the fate of young immigrants covered by the DACA program, withheld their support for a deal.

A similar share, 38 percent, blamed Trump for the shutdown. Just under 2 in 10 (18 percent) said Republicans in Congress were to blame. Taken together, however, the poll shows that a slight majority of Americans — 56 percent — blame the president and his party.

Headline at The Hill for their article about the poll:

Poll: Public blames Dem lawmakers, Trump for shutdown

Americans blame congressional Democrats more than President Trump or congressional Republicans for the government shutdown this weekend, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday.

In the poll, 39 percent of Americans said Democrats deserve the lion's share of blame for the shutdown, with 38 percent blaming Trump. Just 18 percent said most of the blame lies with congressional Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress.

"Just under 2 in 10 (18 percent) said Republicans in Congress were to blame."

Seriously? How are the Dems gonna beat that?

4. Ignore that stat. Look at the combination of Trump & GOP lawmakers being blamed.

The important statistic here is that more people blame the GOP.

Trump got most of the media coverage, as usual, so more people who blame the Republicans in general blamed him than blamed GOP lawmakers.

They've only had a few days to push the "Blame the Democrats" talking point, so it hasn't had time to take root in the popular consciousness yet.

if the 39% are more fired up by the shutdown than the 56%

More people blamed Republicans over the Cruz shutdown in 2013, but Republicans went out and picked up 9 seats several months later.
