He was attempting to consolidate his power. At Homeland Security, a very powerful position, he put in General Kelly. As National Security Adviser, he put in General Flynn. At Defense Department, he put in General Mattis. Because he believed that Generals were more inclined to follow the orders of their Commander in Chief.

Then, he attempted to take over the FBI and the Justice Department. He fired Comey and wanted to fire McCabe. He appointed Christopher Wray, who was recommended by Chris Christie, and who he thought would do his bidding.

He wanted complete control of our government and wanted to fire or destroy anyone that might not be on his side.

Our institutions were threatened like no time in our history, including Watergate. But it wasn't just the FBI, it was also the free press. He called them "fake news". And on and on...

He genuinely thinks that the state and superstructure are his personal assets.

Most third world dictators have been and are puppets of Western governments and their corporations.
It worked so well that they have now taken it home.
