"Let's play a little game"

http://www.servernotservant.com/2012/07/24/lets-play-a-little-game/

I waited tables thru high school and college. Had this happened to me, I think I would have told him to keep the money, then given him the minimal service required. Or screwed up twenty things in a row very obviously, with a giant verbal OOPS after each one as if I were intentionally trying to get to zero.

I'm not sure, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. Depending on how secure I felt in that particular job, I might have asked his date if he used a carrot-and-stick approach on her as well.

The need for some to humiliate others never ceases to amaze me.

1. I've busted my ass as a server

It didn't last long because I wouldn't put up with people like that. I would have refused to serve him.

I like your idea of purposely giving bad service though. I probably would have given a $20 oops with a drink to the face as soon as he brought up such a humiliating proposal.

3. Yeah, that might be the way to go now that I think about it.

Just concede the tip entirely and proceed to screw up everything in every conceivable way, sporting a wide grin the entire time. Get all her stuff right and all his stuff wrong.

that's for sure. I'd love to see that. It would make a good comedy sketch.

2. I think I would have had to tell him I'd give him $10 for each inch of his penis - so keep the $20

I'm sure it wouldn't cost more than that. What an insecure, self-loathing little man. I feel sorry for him he has to make himself bigger and powerful through such BS.

4. I waited tables for years, on and off, during the Seventies and early Eighties

and I HATED it.

I never had anyone pull anything THIS bad on me, but I

know if I had, I would have been SORELY tempted to tell him

where he could stick his twenty bucks.

Gawd...I do hate people who try to humiliate those in

a service position...It's disgusting and tells you ALL

you need to know about such a person's character.

To this day, my spouse and I go out of our way

to be nice and "undemanding" of the wait staff.

We do not "undertip" for any other reason than

rudeness, or manifest indifference because I

I know JUST how often getting plates on tables in

a timely manner has to do with other people and factors

unrelated to the server, e.g, cooks messing up,

being short-staffed, etc.

I have jokingly said that everyone should be "drafted" into waiting tables for a little while just to experience it.

even enjoy it, if you can imagine, others, like mine, are decidedly NOT

good at dealing with the people, the stress, the whole zeitgeist.

I found it so awful, that, honestly, almost thirty years after

hanging up my apron for good, I still have "nightmares"

in which I'm waitressing again...I'll wake up and say "Oh my God,

I dreamed I was waiting tables again, and customers just kept

piling in, table after table, and before I could get the last one, the new one

wanted more coffee, and the next one wanted their order taken,

and I couldn't get everyone, and they were complaining, and walking out,

and yada, yada.."

Well, I'm sure you recall the horror.

It's ranked as one of the most stressful jobs in the world.

never had anyone be that rude to me... I try not to return rudeness in kind and would have simply responded something the to the effect of... "no thank you" or "I only play games when it is fun for everyone" or "instead, how 'bout we play the game where you order food and I do my best to get you a good meal and you in return leave me a 20% tip"

shared tips with the waitstaff, he now leaves hefty tips whenever we're out. I couldn't do a waitress job.....and am so thankful there are people that do.

who owned a restaurant in Miami. His night waitress quit and he was in a jam, so I filled in. Fortunately for him, I had just been laid off my job and had time on my hands. I had never worked as a waitress in my life. All my jobs were behind a desk. I would never want to make being a server a career. Most of the customers were fairly nice, except for one group that came in with about 5 kids, left a mess and did not even leave a tip. I don't know how servers put up with that shit. I could have walked out at any time, but stuck it out until he hired a waitress.

Oh cry me a frigging river. Here is a hint for you “hard working people” Its not that hard to fetch a plate and bring it to someone. You mean i should have tipped my mom all those years growing up that she brought food to the table? Oh wait that was her job just like its your job. I liked this guys idea but i do something close to it. I will start at 5% (sorry dumbasses you are’t getting 20% of my total just for fetching a plate or refilling a soda) and then i’ll start deducting from their tip.

Spitting on or otherwise messing with my stuff? better believe i will have you charged with food tampering/poisoning and not only will you be fired but i will sue you and the place I’m at for hiring mentally unstable people. You better find a new job quickly once that lawsuit hits.

You a-holes want a “reasonable” tip then i want exclusive rights to fire you for your failure to do your job correctly. Since i would be the one paying more than your boss that would make you my employee and i should have the right to fire on the spot. its this self entitlement BS that your type has that’s why i at max will tip 3$ regardless of whatever my total is. Don’t like it? get a better job, or don’t agree to working for 2.xx an hour..morons."
