"If it wasn't clear before: McGahn has jumped ship"

The tweet below is from Natasha Bertrand of the Atlantic, but I'm hearing similar comments on MSNBC right now, re tonight's bombshell story from the NYT abut McGahn having to threaten to quit to stop Trump from firing Mueller last June:

So he couldn't lie about it. His law license and his freedom were on the line.

Whoever told Mueller first is the one to thank. O'Donnell says April Ryan reported the rumor previously that the WH was in a state, because Trump was wanting to fire Mueller. Which has turned out to be true.

McGahn is no hero, he wasn't going to do something to get himself in legal jeopardy. Where was he when Comey got fired, what about convincing McCabe to resign?

He was just covering his ass. It could have made him subject to a charge of abetting the obstruction of justice.

The whole WH knew and was in a state of flurry and anxiousness, April Ryan reported previously, because Trump was wanting to fire Mueller back in June. And now it turns out to be true. So someone was talking before now.

I mean, what's the point in someone declaring fealty to the king if he can just turn around and say, "Bite me"? It's tRump who is the real victim here.

Note: I'm simply anticipating the new RW talking point.

in fact, Ari Melber on O'Donnell tonight is touching on that.

McGahn is an attorney. He probably has plenty of legal liability in other ways, but he had no choice but to fess up to Mueller UNLESS he wanted to lose his law license AND go to jail.

Sure, it looks like he's doing the American people a solid, but he's more likely positioning himself to be out of the line of fire when the shit finally hits the fan.

Frankly, I think Mueller has him in a box. This might get him off the hook, but I wonder. He might be in too deep.

otherwise the lawyer would have to recuse himself. And, on MSNBC, one of the guests said Mueller has approved the lawyer to represent all three which I take to mean he doesn't see a conflict of interest that would apply to any of them.

didn't have the guts to fire Mueller himself, he could have made the phone call to Rosenstein. He wanted McGahn to make the call and Then Trump would try to say he only fired Mueller because of advice from his counsel.

to fall on his sword if Trumpy gets blamed. Trumpy tried to distance himself from prosecution by creating a fall guy. Everyone associated with Trumpy has to know that he'll turn on any of them if it means delaying the inevitable.

The hidden losers in this drama are the leadership of the GOP. In fact, all of the Congressional GOP have shown cowardice and spinelessness unparalleled in the nation's history. Now, partly because no one acted in Congress, Trumpy's White House staff are scurrying like rats. They're all buckling, they're all folding. At least the smart ones are.

We're watching the Crash in slow motion.
