GOP mocks Wasserman Schultz for saying $1,000 doesn't go 'very far'

Republicans are criticizing Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) after she downplayed the $1,000 bonuses a number of companies have announced following passage of the new GOP tax law.

At an event in Florida on Thursday hosted by the Not One Penny campaign, Wasserman Schultz noted that employees would be taxed on these bonuses.

"I'm not sure that $1,000 — which is taxed, taxable — goes very far for almost anyone," she said.

The comments from Wasserman Schultz, the former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, were quickly picked up by right-leaning media outlets. They also got the attention of House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and other conservatives on social media.

It's great for a temporary bailout but Americans need good jobs, fair housing and a living wage. Trickle down bullshit is still bullshit.

. . .and absolutely everyone is quite comfortable. They see a grand as a bigger TV than they were going to buy, or a new computer with more bells and whistles. So, they picture it as a added luxury.

Doesn't mean much to a two income household with a $1,500 house payment and $800 per month in taxes and insurance. After taxes, it's 30% of one month's non-discretionary spending. It's not added luxury.

That's why the R's see this is a such a wonderful thing. They can upgrade to first class now on their trip to Aspen.

Yeah no one wants to work their late shift job at Burger King cleaning toilets and sweeping floors. If they think that's working harder than us, they are delusional!

I could re-tile my bathroom floor
It could cover my winter heating bill
It could cover new tires from both our vehicles

If $1000 is nothing to you, send it my way!

Terrible tone deaf comment from DWS. Definitely doesn't help with the 'urban elite' label the right is slapping on our party

. . .if after the bonus the company started cutting jobs? And your job was one of them?

Because every company that made the news over these thousand dollar bonuses also announced layoffs within a couple weeks.

I think that's more where DWS (and i'm no big fan of her) was going. That thousand will evaporate in no time and for the people who got that and then lost a job, it means almost nothing.

I get her point. Unfortunately I also get the Republican counter point. $1,000 is a significant amount of people for the almost half of the public that has less than $400 in total savings. However what Republicans cut from the budget, in order to partially offset their tax giveaway mostly to the rich, will come back to haunt the average American family many times over at a cost far exceeding $1,000 as the economic safety net is shredded. And then there is the debt being passed on to their children.

but it doesn't change the basic point. The question, I guess, is how much love and loyalty does a $1k bonus check buy?

A $1000 bonus after taxes is about $600. If anyone here things $600 is "pocket change" feel free to send me your "pocket change" because that's a mortgage payment on my condo for me.

I think of someone came around and said they were going to take away 1k (or even $600) from people, it would seem like "pocket change" anymore...
