Scott Walker isn't allowing elections.

Scott Walker Is Literally Preventing Wisconsinites From Voting
The Republican governor is refusing to call special elections to fill vacant legislative seats, as his allies attack nonpartisan oversight of elections.
By John Nichols --- 2018.01.26

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and his Republican allies have never been enthusiastic about democracy. After grabbing power in the “Republican-wave” election of 2010—with a massive boost from heavy spending by the Koch brothers and other out-of-state donors—they redrew legislative district lines to prevent competitive elections, enacted multiple measures that made it harder for Wisconsinites to vote, and dismantled the state Government Accountability Board that used to provide nonpartisan oversight of elections and ethics issues.

But it turns out that Walker and his cronies were just getting started on a project that in recent weeks has seen embattled Wisconsin Republicans upend new commissions that were supposed to promote fair elections and responsible governance, while the governor has refused to call elections to fill legislative vacancies in districts that might be won by Democrats.

As the onetime Republican star who crashed and burned as a contender for the party’s 2016 presidential nomination prepared to deliver his annual State of the State message, Republican state senators denied the confirmations of the directors of Wisconsin’s ethics and elections commissions and Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald, a close ally of the governor, said he wanted to force out employees of the commissions who had participated in investigations of Republican wrongdoing.

After Walker’s Republicans effectively voted to oust Ethics Commission administrators Brian Bell and Michael Haas and began talking about reclassifying positions at the commissions as part of a partisan purge of nonpartisan oversight agencies, Democratic state Representative Jimmy Anderson blasted his Republican colleagues for undermining “the integrity of our electoral process as well as the vital role that these watchdogs play in regulating lobbying and campaign activity. Wisconsin has a long-standing tradition as a leader in nonpartisan election administration.”

Anderson is right. But nothing the legislature has done so undermines the integrity of the electoral process as what Walker is doing personally. ...............

for 8 years. The GOP runs all branches of the state government and they have pushed through a lot of the same laws locally that the GOP wants to pass nationally. It has been painful to experience. Gerrymandering, voter ID laws, stoking of rural resentment, Koch money have allowed the GOP to reign supreme here and there is no end in sight.

One of their key opinions -- retrieved from Reaganism -- is that bad-mouthing and wrecking government is good for their careers and their party, if not for the populace.

If, for a 4-year term you die 3 months in... there should be a SE. But if you die 3 months from your term ending, shouldn't the governor be able to just appoint someone to the last 3 months?

It makes me want to vomit. Walker and the Republicans in Wisconsin have been trampling citizens rights for the past 8 years. I live in NJ but followed with astonishment how quickly Walker and his crew dismantled democracy in Wisconsin. The Right to Work scam dismantling unions, legislative votes taken in the middle of the night without democratic members being notified and barring the public from the State House are just a few of Walker and his minions actions. Now Foxx Conn maybe the biggest con on the people of Wisconsin with its grotesque state tax abatements. standouts. Why do you take such commentary personally? I can’t stand Christie and he was the least popular governor in the country when he recently left office, the people of NJ saw him for the creep he was. The point is that Christie couldn’t get elected dog catcher now. NJ certainly has many problems but we recognize a fraud when we see one and vote them out. If more people in your state were angry then maybe Ryan would be gone before he takes away Medicare, soc sec etc. and maybe more politicians like Feingold and Wellstone would be elected. Are you seriously proud of the electoral history of your state? I guess calling me out on an obvious typo makes you feel better. Let’s all stand around in a circle to hold hands and hope Trump isn’t elected again is the attitude that guarantees him A second term. I’m not angry at you, I’m angry at the people in your state who don’t know better. If that anger doesn’t manifest itself in Dems flocking to the polls then we are all doomed. Being angry at you and being angry at the political climate are not mutually exclusive. If you are trying to reach the " people in(Wisconsin) who don't know better" and think DU is that place.....then you are again mistaken.

Wellstone and Bachman were/are from MINNESOTA, genius. But that's still just flyover land right, so who cares? And last of the great Wisconsin politicians who championed working people... hm... see Baldwin, Tammy (D), US Senator from Wisconsin. She's up for re-election and is a reliable liberal Democratic vote in the Senate. It would be nice to win that chamber back in '18 so you might consider throwing her a few bucks. I know I have.

takeover strategies. Scutt Walker is a dim bulb who has prospered due to effectively unlimited outside money, the comically inept Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and a general wave of white resentment that has swept over the Rust Belt. He knows ONLY ambition, and thus far has been able to mostly win (the 2016 Republican primary notwithstanding) by employing his only trick, the politics of personal resentment. Now he is indeed crapping his pants, as are his far-right puppet masters, at the prospect that he could lose in 2018 if the Democrats are able to actually field a viable candidate- i.e. one with qualifications beyond having a pulse and the ability to fog a mirror.

the law.

https://www.lawserver.com/law/state/wisconsin/wi-laws/wisconsin_laws_8-50

It's confusing, but as I read it, "no special election may be held after February 1 preceding the spring election unless it is held on the same day as the spring election." In addition, the date of a special election cannot be less than 62 days out from when the order announcing the special election is issued. The two vacancies that are at issue here occurred on or around December 31, 2017, and even if a special election announcement had been issued on January 1, 2018, the earliest date for the special election would have been 62 days out, or around March 1. But March 1 is after February 1, so the special election would then have to be held with the spring election, which is in early April.

Maybe Walker is pulling a fast one here, but it seems like the statute simply may be controlling the schedule.
