Trump might try to fire Mueller again, McGahn doesn't want to get in any more trouble than he already is, and Trump is in Switzerland right now.

The NYT only attributes their story to "four people" so we don't even know if it's coming from the WH, or Mueller's office, or somewhere else. But the timing is interesting.
