When Patrick Wensink was commissioning the cover for his book, Broken Piano For President, he probably wasn't expecting a cease-and-desist letter from Jack Daniel's Properties -- the owner of the Jack Daniel's trademarks. [More from Mashable:
In what might just be the nicest cease-and-desist letter we've ever seen, the people at Jack Daniel's Properties not only politely explained the situation to Wensink, the company even offered to help pay for the cost of designing a new cover.
Jack Daniel's Properties isn't even forcing Wensink to take his book off the shelf. Instead, the company just wants him to change the cover when it's reprinted.
Even better, the publicity around this rare act of lawyerly kindness might end up helping sales for Wensink's book.
If you read Amazon's review of the book, it sounds like a good read too. The cover will change soon, so this might be a great collectors item. Only $15.00.

(10,479 posts)there. I lived in Lynchburg for about 5 years. Depending on what process was at work the odor reminded me of dirty, sweatty socks or country ham cooking. Not very pleasant.

(11,304 posts)When I lived in Germany and my husband and I went to visit my Italian cousins in Italy I made sure I bought good ole Jack Daniels. He has a big wine cellar but when we got him that Jack you would have thought I gave him a million dollars. I was so happy that he loved it.

He had a blast taking the tour.

You can buy the used barrels for your garden, and a few of my friends have them and you can STILL smell the whiskey!
Personally, I can tolerate a shot of Gentleman Jack , but the smell of the black makes me gag ( too much fun in the seventies in high school when you could get sloshed at age 18 )
Now, country ham. This is an ABOMINATION!

The publishing company has announced they will be changing the cover for subsequent reprints at their own expense since the distillers have been so polite about the whole thing.
This is great. It was a lot cheaper for Jack Daniel's Properties to write a polite letter and even pay for new cover art that it would have been to hire a lawyer to send a nasty letter threatening legal action.
I wish more outfits would take a cue from this. The world isn't always out to screw you over and sometimes working with people is the easiest and cheapest way to get things done.

(602 posts)After college classes, we'd hit the liquor store and grab a bottle of Jack because it was cheap, and it did the job. Now it is on the shelf with the high class brands, more or less, but it still tastes the same. Good marketing placement?
