The Profound Hypocrisy of the Republicans Depicted by Paul Krugman in Five Brief Tweets

"SNIP............

One key lesson of 2017 was that everything liberals have said about right-wing hypocrisy was true -- in fact understated 1/

The religious right claimed to care about moral values, but is fine with a guy who cheats on his third wife with a porn star; it was never about morality, it was about patriarchal privilege 2/

The flag-waving super-patriotic right is fine with people who colluded with Russia, and in fact is eager to help in the coverup, because it was never about patriotism, just about power 3/

The economic right is fine with policies that actively discriminate against clean energy in favor of coal, because it was never about free markets, it was about rewarding special interests 4/

And of course the law-and-order right is fine with demonizing and trying to destroy the careers of dedicated law enforcement officials if the pursuit of justice happens to threaten Republicans 5/

I especially love:

It was never about morality, it was about patriarchal privilege.

That's also at the heart of, is the foundation of the whole "family values" sentiment. Their family values are distinctly and apparently irreversibly patriarchal -- FATHER is in charge; FATHER takes over; FATHER rules and makes the rules, and FATHER is an Old Testament patriarch with brutal, vindictive, punitive laws.

But that's OK because it's not about morality or ethics (New Testament), it's about power.

RA - thank you for putting it so succinctly.

GOD, I hate being equated (as a father) to one of these degenerates!

As for being a father NOT equivalent to these, you're in a perfect place to help defeat patriarchy.

It is abundantly clear it was never about state rights, it's always been about imposing their judeochristian morality in lieu of constitutional rights. 6/

work like they do when they go into an altered relaxed state with marijuana. Grass is the enemy of big business. They don't just want you from 9 to 5. They want your waking hours and your sleep too to be focussed on business.

For hundreds of years, coal mining was the gold standard of crappy, dangerous, life-shortening jobs. Manifestos, movies, DH Lawrence novels, songs, the entire culture tells us how terrible this job is. Along comes Barack Obama with a plan to shut the book on coal and suddenly coal mining is a golden-glow American lifestyle.

WTF??

so is the GOP trying to soak up the last ounces of profit from the energy business before clean energy, that will be free to the middle class after an intial investment, becomes the norm.

They wanted his hardline immigration, deregulation, neutering of the EPA, and huge tax breaks.....

No surprises they would ignore his personal life , while praising him for everything else....

But yeah Bill Clinton would agree on the hypocrisy charge.
