Americans want government to "do more"

JAN 28 2018, 11:37 AM ET
by DANTE CHINNI

The January NBC/WSJ poll found 58 percent of Americans agreed with the statement, "Government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people" while only 38 percent agreed that"Government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals."

That 58 percent wanting to the government to "do more" is an all-time high on a question that has been asked .. for more than 20 years ...

Throughout .. Obama’s eight years .. the number stayed fairly consistent .. bouncing between 46 percent and 52 percent ...

If these deadbeats in DC would just do what they were elected to do, many of them DECADES ago, people would view them in a whole new light. Once the "easy money" starts flowing, they forget who they are supposed to be representing. Term limits might help. Getting big money out of politics would help. The ordinary citizens have to take a back seat to the super wealthy these days. It would be interesting to have a reporter or several, investigate HOW they all become millionaires while in office.

...being a government that supports the people.

Regulations are actually protections. Entitlements are what we earn for being good citizens. America is about Americans.

And what really gets my goat... we are a nation of immigrants. This is what makes America great.

-what the GOP has labeled as "entitlements" are programs that PEOPLE PAID INTO via payroll and/or income taxes. YES you should be "entitled" to what YOU paid for to use in the future. The GOP has bastardized the term "entitlement" by making it into a negative (like they did with the term "liberal" ) as if it were something they were "giving away to moochers for free", so the designation of these programs needs to be reworked - or maybe just go back to the original legal name "OASDI" - Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance.

I.e., IT IS "INSURANCE" that is paid for by citizens.

I've known a bunch of Republicans who contradict themselves constantly on this. They really do want government services and they want them run well.

They, and other anti-government yackers, are always claiming that government is broken 10,000 ways. But by far most of these same people do no preparation for big disasters, revealing a profound belief in and dependence on government to take care of them that belies everything they say.

But they don't know it!

I'm absolutely sure that 58% is actually much higher, though of course they'll vote their jerseys, then blame Democrats for their dissatisfactions.

Just like cutting programs. You hear people yelling for cuts, but not programs THEY use!

"Socialism" is any government program that doesn't benefit them directly.

That would be interesting to see. My only concern is that we'd find the reddest states are those who take the most from the federal government, but would have the lower numbers. Then we're back to figuring out how to fight willful ignorance.

even for the right wing Natavist Parties here in most of Europe. The people are worried about inequality and want more of a helping hand as opposed tot he back of the hand.

at the over 65 statistic. Are they the old, white men who want government out of their lives but when they get to be over 65 realize that without Medicare and Social Security they'd be screwed?

However, looking at the chart as a whole, it's women and minorities that need to take back this country and we will!

Get out there and vote AND run for office.

Because women outlive men by a lot, there are far more women in older age groups. Those over 65 are similarly “whiter” than the rest of the population. These differences are becoming less pronounced as men and non-whites are living longer.

Depends upon what a person sees as doing more. Evangelicals think restricting the right of a woman to make her own healthcare choices is government doing more, small businesspeople may think leveling the resources playing field with large companies is doing more.
