Is the Trump Presidency Really Just a Long Con Game?

I keep waiting for the turn of this game, when the con men get away with the proceeds and everyone else is left scratching their heads, trying to figure out what happened.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm in the audience for my first viewing of "The Sting," trying to figure out who's in on the con and who the actual mark really is.

It's worrisome. Will Trump and Putin get away with looting everything and then clearing out to some safe place, leaving us with nothing but dust and debris to sift through? As I was until the very end of that film, I'm more than a little confused.

the power used to rest in the formal institutions of government, as largely controlled by the people, through a slightly imperfect representative democracy.

then some rich people and their heirs who are still pissed at fdr decided to build up stronger institutions. so they bought up media outlets, starting with hate radio and later foxnews. they got ronnie to repeal the fairness doctrine so they could blast hate propaganda 24/7. they got campaign finance laws weakened so they could flood money in.

they corrupted the democratic process to the point where a majority can vote for a democrat for president but a republican wins; a majority can vote for a democrat for their representative but republicans have a majority in the house; a majority of the people prefer democrats but republicans control the senate; and the supreme court is right-wing as well.

the biggest news source, or nearly so, is outright right-wing propaganda, and even if the rest of the media is not as overt, they still at a minimum respond to that right-wing agenda.

the question is, is this new institutional axis of billionaires, hate media, and the republican party the dominant institutional force today? or is it still the federal government?

in the end, donnie may have done us a favor by laying this battle bare, allowing those of us who actually care for the country to wake up and protect the federal government from this attempted takeover.

had a more mundane republican won, or even if hillary had won, this axis might have had their movement delayed, but it might have nevertheless grown stronger and eventually they might have won.

donnie may be in it for the grift and glory, but this axis is in it for long-term control of our country.

they can't be allowed to succeed, and donnie can't be seen as one very bad apple.

this is a much bigger fight.

The real problem is that if it is just a con game, the damage from it will be very hard to repair. That's the worry.

I hope we will begin fixing this in November and continue on to make sure nothing like Trump ever happens again in this country. If we don't learn from this and behave accordingly, there's not much hope, I'm afraid.
