if their only penalty is donnie resigning and losing the next election to a one-termer, then we're still lost as a nation.

watergate actually was a rather campaign-specific scandal. nixon and his plumbers. it should have tarnished the republican brand, but maybe it was appropriate to just kill his career and move on. prison time would have been nice, but still.

donnie's crisis is vastly more broad. it's not just him and his campaign. members of congress, the republican party apparatus, donors, possibly the nra, etc. are all implicated.

donnie needs to go, sure, but so do other members of congress. campaign finance needs to be vastly improved to eliminate foreign influence. hackable, unauditable voting machines need to be gone. the fairness doctrine needs to come back.

just to name a few reforms.

and republican need to lose *a lot* of elections for years to come, not just one.

I agree, but that is not what always happens....

.Jimmy Carter won in 1976, but Regan won in 80 and 84.

People have short memories. Yes, I agree Trump needs to go, and so do a lot of "other members of congress"
What will happen in 2020 is much too far away to know. I honestly thought after Nixon, that we would never elect another Republican. So, did many others....

That is not what happened. No one knows what will happen. I sure don't and I say that right now, even though I predict what might happen, it is just that. I never believed that under any circumstances Trump could get elected...So, did many others. ???

sadly, he's very well positioned to be seen as a one-off in many respects.

but really, the republican party need to take a long-lasting major hit because of this.
