Walmart responds to outrage over alleged race bias in product display

Walmart has responded to allegations that it is racially discriminating against its customers.

On Friday news broke that the store is being sued by a customer who claims that it is segregating products by the race of the people who use them.

The plaintiff, Essie Grundy, was shopping for a comb in her local store when she found it was locked in a cabinet: "That's when I noticed that all of the African-American products were locked up under lock and key," Grundy told reporters at a news conference on Friday.
Walmart immediately stamped out these allegations.

"We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind at Walmart," a spokesperson for the company told Business Insider.

"Some products such as electronics, automotive, cosmetics and other personal care products are subject to additional security. Those determinations are made on a store-by-store basis using data supporting the need for the heightened measures," the spokesperson said.

So are the managers of that particular store racist then?

Seems to me that if they are targeting products for lock access, used (essentially ONLY) by one group or another and especially given these are not high priced items--argument over.

particular issue other than WM locally (midwest) has gone crazy about
what it calls "security". My sis went to buy a .98 cent pair of tweezers
for mom only to find they were locked up. Finally
getting someone to come with a key, they put the tweezers in a smaller
locked "security" box to take to the main register. Once at the exit register
trying to check out the cashier could not unlock the tweezers box. Took
her about an extra 45 minutes or so to check out...insane...imo

Who knows what's in it, really? It's expensive, though. That much I know.

They keep cigarettes in a locked case, too. These days, those things are like gold, I understand. Guys rob convenience stores just to steal cartons of them. Often they don't bother with the cash register.

Which is the real crime. Not every mother can breast feed and the price of formula is shamefully high.

Guess the question in this case is are black associated items locked away while the white one aren't?

The other part is: are the black-associated items stolen more frequently than the white-associated items?

Walmart will assert that they don't need to disclose specific details about the frequency of theft or the items targeted, it's likely that the particular store would claim that a higher rate of theft justifies the additional security.

Of course, the easy and obvious solution is to lock up both the black- and white-associated item. Razors and/or blades are commonly locked up without any subtext, so why not? I guess that solution didn't get presented at the business meeting that month...

Usually the expensive face creams. They put a locked plexiglass box over the original container. The plexiglass is unlocked at the cash register.

So firggen obvious. If one has ever worked Retail, you spot this as you walk in the door. First thing is,is there a so called Security person with their Podium as you enter. Is the Person White or African-American or are there two people at that podium.

Look at their Product mix, that will tell you who their customer focus is. When it comes to Electronics,do they have backup product on the floor? Is their one or more so called floor walkers(security people)floating around the adjacent Clothing Racks and other displays.

So friggin obvious.

I hate to go to Wally World but have to for certain products. So I will pick up other stuff I need at the time.

I go in @ once a month and can guarantee that whatever I have on my list they will be out of at least one of the items and another I will have to buy an off brand.

Just went in today and had to buy their store brand of peanuts because they had no Planter's Dry Roasted peanuts. Item 1 of 3 I wanted to get.

Their stores always look like the aftermath of a tornado anymore.

At my local So Cal Walmart, other things locked up like some pricey booze, sex products, a few meds, video games, computer tech, jewelry, gun junk, expensive perfumes... all the fun stuff. The only instance that even remotely might be viewed as segregation is all the personal products (mostly hair and skin care) intended for blacks are grouped in one section.
