I Lasted Three Minutes

I had determined to control my gag reflex and watch Trump’s SOTU speech – but couldn’t get any further than his introduction.

It was the applause. I just couldn’t get past the applause. I sat there watching people – the people who were elected to represent the best interests of their constituents and the citizenry as a whole, who took an oath to defend the Constitution, who vowed to honour and protect our democracy and the institutions established to uphold it – applauding a man who continues to systematically destroy everything our country stands for.

I saw people rise to their feet to welcome a man who has repeatedly lied to the American people, and has consistently demonstrated his incompetence, his ignorance, and his incredible stupidity.

I saw people applauding a man who is under investigation for colluding with our enemies, and has used every means imaginable to thwart that investigation.

I saw people clap their hands in glee, knowing the man they are warmly embracing has brought shame on the office he holds, has lowered our nation’s standing in the global community, has distanced us from our allies, and can’t even visit our traditional allied nations for fear of being met with massive protests.

I saw people applauding a self-proclaimed pussy-grabber who was well-known as a cheat, a liar, and con-man long before he ran for office – a man who calls white supremacists and KKK members “very fine people”, a man who mocks the disabled, a man who wants our immigration policies to be determined by his idea of who comes from “shithole countries”.

It was the applause. It drove home the fact that this petty, ignorant, mentally incompetent, self-serving, treasonous idiot is actually being lauded as he dismantles our democracy and arrogantly holds himself out as being above the law.

It was the applause. It sounded like a death knell for everything we once held sacrosanct as a nation, and every truth we once considered to be self-evident because of who we are as a people.

The only silver lining tonight is that when this Putin puppet is finally exposed for the traitor he is and is removed from office, the applause that will rise throughout the country – indeed, throughout the world – will be truly deafening.

All the way through the speech, he'd pause and start applauding himself. Very, very weird.

I'd had CNN on in the background, and when the "festivities" started, I thought maybe I'd brave it through.

But as I said, I lasted three minutes and turned it off.

then the weird anti-North Korean stuff. I thought Trump said the poor North Korean defector "walked across China on crutches" -- then the guy holds up his old crutches like Tiny Tim. Finishes with something about American monuments, make America great again, "USA USA USA" chanting. All I could think of was WAR.

That was surreal.

Of an old Olympic tape from 2016 -- China vs. Serbia in the women's volleyball final. I'm clearing my DVR for the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Then I tuned to MSNBC. Matthews and McAuliffe were skewering Trump. Rob Reiner was even more blunt. It was everything I needed to know.

photo of him. Also, as Nance says, I knew I would not be able to bear all the sychophantic, ass-kissers in the republican party lapping up his every word like it was manna from heaven. They make me almost as sick as he does.

that your first paragraph was the best - but then I kept reading and realize that they're all brilliant - and really hit on the fact that while strange circumstances did indeed put this idiot into the office, we have a giant room full of idiots that continue to allow IQ45 to dismantle our wonderful country while they stand around smiling and feeding his own damaged ego.

Shameful!

Great post. I watch some of it and that applause chapped me too.

That is usually after my bedtime so I didn't plan to stay up. But hearing him talk about unity when he's done everything he can to be divisive, was so disgusting.

I kept thinking he'd say "Meinen Kamaraden..."

After watching the applause and slobbering of the GOPers as The Shithole entered the chamber and walked to the podium, I turned it off.

I knew immediately that there was NO WAY I could sit through the actual speech.

I have since seen clips of parts of the speech that were aired on the late-night shows, and that was sickening enough.
