(3,617 posts)The FBI Bureau in NY (think Guilanni), were going to give a press release saying that Comey was trying to cover up for Clinton.
They had Weiner's laptop, which they reported had new emails which outlined criminality. (more BS like the pizzagate, but with some kind of sex island, etc.). The NY FBI sat on that laptop from Oct 3rd for 3 weeks before they turned it over to Comey and told him that if he didn't announce to Congress (as he said he would under oath in testimony before congress), that they were going to go to the press.
So he had a choice to make. Appear as if he is 'concealing' facts from congress, or tell congress that this new information that could affect the closed case (Clinton email) had to be investigated.
He had his own guys (not the NY FBI) do the forensics on the laptop over the weekend, where they were able to conclude that it had nothing on it that would change the original outcome of the closed case.
It also came out in his testimony in front of congress that he actually was investigating the NY FBI due to the fact that Guilanni and Calstrom had said on different radio interviews that they were talking to active FBI Agents, in NY, who hated Hillary were gung ho on prosecuting Clinton. (we don't know the outcome of that investigation either).
I believe that Comey (who was also aware of the Russian hacking by that point) had to do as he said he would (report to congress if there was further information that arose that could effect the Clinton email case), or be shown to be biased in favor of her, which would negatively effect the institution of the FBI, and the trust of the public.
The choice he had was between bad, and very bad. Conceal or Report to congress. Congress leaked the memo, please don't forget that. He actually said under oath that this choice made him nauseous.

Solid job he did of protecting the FBIs integrity.

(92,372 posts)before the election, the media reported that the email investigation had been reopened. That was a LIE. The television networks then proceeded to parade every right wing political across the television screens for the next several days propagating that LIE.
Guess who was missing in action to correct the record? COMEY. It wasn't until the end of the week, late in the day when he released a brief statement that those emails were duplicates, and there was nothing there.

(33,643 posts)It was straight republican dirty tricks both at FBI NY and the Congressmen who released the info, and our STUPID media constantly breathlessly trumpeting FBI REOPENING TEH INVESTIGATION ZOMG!!! Game Changer!!! ... right before the Election.
My one bone to pick w/Comey is that if it was only going to take 1 weekend to check these things, I would THINK he could've waited two flippin' days then reported to Congress ... "found a few emails from Hill on this lappie but they're dupes/been reviewed already" and that would've been that.
But I suppose there's some reason I'm unaware of that made that impractical/not allowed.

(16,178 posts)when that helping to throw elections to one party happened the party in power couldn't wait to crow about how good the FBI was.

(14,167 posts)It's his fault we're having to deal with this mess. If he had just put his ego aside and held off saying anything until AFTER the election, we wouldn't be here.
They played him like a fiddle. Still glad he got fired.
